Generally, Latency is caused by using the wrong driver for a given sound card.

Unless the sound card is specifically designed for ASIO, don't use ASIO...choose MME.

Latency shows up when you have midi stuff playing through a soft synth and also audio in teh tracks as well. I can get my MME drivers to play well with BB but the latency issue shows up when I go to a DAW and have audio and midi with synths in the same project.

Processing the synths into real time and mixing that with audio is where the latency becomes apparent.

If the sound card is external and supports ASIO, then by all means use ASIO since it makes all that stuff above work together and produces great results.

Sometimes ASIO4ALL will work and sometimes (as in my case) it doesn't. A4A is simply a wrapper that tries to fool a non-ASIO sound card into thinking it is an ASIO sound card.
