"Django in June" (instrumental)
6 of 7 - Tangled Roots Project

This is the sixth track of my Tangled Roots project.

I grew up both in Belgium and the US, and my dad loved and listened to all kinds of music. He introduced me to the music of Django Reinhardt, and the Hot Club of France. I have always had a great interest in and affection for Gypsy Jazz, or Jazz Manouche as it's called in French. It is an incredible hybrid of Roma, European, and American influences.

"Django in June" is New England's premier occasion to celebrate, study and just plain enjoy the musical tradition associated with this music. There is Django Camp, which gives musicians the opportunity to immerse themselves for 5 days under the tutelage of world-class artists from both sides of the Atlantic, on the campus of Smith College in Northampton, MA. Locals and many visitors attend a grand finale of weekend concerts at the historic Academy of Music in downtown Northampton, MA. We go every year, and have seen and met (Tim Kliphuis in particular!) some of the Gypsy Jazz RealTracks contributors who are featured in BiaB.

I can't really play this music at any level of proficiency, but I can write changes, so I put together this song and arrangement in BiaB (with the most post-edits in Logic Pro X of any track in this series) as a tribute!

As always, thanks so much for listening!

It's a wonderful tribute to the genre. I liked this a lot and it kept my attention throughout.

Another nice contribution. Good tribute to a great guitarist who helped frame a whole genre of music.

Thanks for sharing.

This is outstanding work; the good thing about BIAB is it lets us work outside our skill set musically. Very nice arrangement, the all of the solo's sparkle; thanks for sharing

Thanks very much to Charlie, Guenter, Steve, and Robert. I very much appreciate your listening and your comments.

The whole range of Gypsy Jazz music really brings to the forefront the idea of chops in the service of the song. The players in this genre are the original shredders, and it is heartening to see the number of current guitar heroes who acknowledge the Django Reinhardt influence and inspiration. The music serves as a great example that high energy music need not be electric!

Very nice, Michael.

We don't hear those RTs used much here (in the Showcase).
They are spectacular. Your use of them, too...love those bass breaks..

Excellent mix and arrangement. It is obvious you put a good deal of thought into what you are doing.

As all your others, a terrific listen.

Thanks very much, Floyd. That set of RTs is a real gem, and deserve more exposure. I appreciate the kind words - all the more when they come from a fellow musician!

Nice Michael! I get tempted to go to the JuneFest every year. Sounds like a great experience. That was a fun listen. Thanks.

Thanks to both Patrick and Jim for the listens and the kind comments.

I realize the style is not as familiar to many people but the genre is a real opportunity for very intricate playing over fast rhythms.

Excellent. We love Stephane and Django!

I used to enjoy playing bass on tunes like
this back in the day - w/o the hot bass solos smile

Very cool!

Hi Michael,

This really reminds us of Django Reinhardt!
We love the Gypsy jazz RTs, the bass break is very nice, the arrangement very professional and the end is cool.

Thanks very much to Janice & Bud, and Rob & Anne-Marie. I'm glad you found the piece evocative of the real masters! Someday I am going to try a longer tune in that style, when I have the time.

Now, this is my kind of music! cool

The only 'fault' I could possibly find is that it's just too damn good! You've rather put my measly Django tribute on here to shame crazy

Hi Michael, very well done. Floyd is right I have used some of these sounds before but in general we don't hear much of it in this forum. Thanks for posting.
