You are working in the right area of Biab by using shots, holds pushes etc. The "trick" with shots are trying to find a Funk style that works with the song you are attempting to recreate.
Biab is chock-full of some great Funk/Soul Real Tracks and you should be able to get pretty close to some of his songs.
It is all in the layout. Get the shots/pushes/chords set up correctly with a great style and you should be grooving. Regenerating your song a few times should give you a few different takes. Once you get something you like, you can then freeze the track(s) so they stick.
