Josie,

This is exactly the same brand/model as the one I bought nearly 20 years ago. It's still going and it's the only one I have operating in the house. I have it plugged into a centrally located power socket.

http://www.pestxitusa.com/PestXit_USA/Duo.html

What I understand is that the ultrasonic sound makes rats, mice, possums, etc., feel uncomfortable and it takes them around two weeks to work out that they feel better when they are not around the house. Eventually they get it. It doesn't have any affect on pets that I'm aware of.

Regards,
Noel

Keith,

EXCELLENT and well-informed post! Based on real world experience, everything you said adds hope that the problem can be solved, and that professional help is available for free through the health dept!

Josie,

sorry for my nonsense.. but I'm incorrigible. There was no way I could walk away from that setup without blowing it out of proportion like that. I hope there is forgiveness to be found.

I also hope you get rid of the rats pretty soon!

O.k., I'm kind-a late, but there are somethings not yet said, some do help, some could help. Most of them are not expensive.

If you know where the rats come into your house, close that entrance. Rats need less than an inch to get through. So if there is
a) a gap at a door or a window,
- add some nylonbrush or a rubber lip in that area, or

b) an opening for ventilation, a window or door
- add a metal grid with a mesh size of significantly less than an inch
- where applicable also rock wool and (!) cement mortar is helpful
- in some cases also sheet metal helps to stop the rodents

c) Drains should have a metal mesh at the opening to the house to prevent the rats to enter through this channel. Also backflow traps do help.

Some domestic remedies are (they are said to help, but nobody knows for sure):

Powdered Cayenne pepper or hot chili pepper scattered about the rats' runways should help. Rats clean themselves and therefore eat the hot Cayenne pepper. It is said that they don't like that.

A limewash coat mixed with green vitriol is said to help.

It is also said that they don't appreciate the smell of camomille, cloves, mint/peppermint, oleander, and turpentine.

Used cat litter in a canvas bag put about the runways of rats is also said to help.

If you use a rat trap to catch them dead or alive, peanut butter is said to be a magic bait.

Until you have some professional help to get rid of the rats, maybe one or two of the above do help in the mean time.

Good luck.
Guido

another possible point of entry:

last time I changed my dryer vent there was a mummified mouse in it. The vent exited the house at a point that was close to the ground, and the mouse apparently chewed through the screen to gain entry. No telling how many got through without being mummified by the hot air from the dryer.

legend has it that when you catch rats in traps, their spirits return to wander around your house for eternity.

Just sayin'.

If you see one and his eyes are glowing red like lasers, that means he was a really bad rat in his earth life.

Sundance:

Cunning plan.

Put something deliciously attractive to rats (my curry comes to mind) OUTSIDE of the house, near the location, and lace it with rat poison. Make sure you don't get the neighbours dog interested wink Some form of container that a dog can't reach i.e a pipe . Don't worry about cats unless it's Beluga Caviar, which my cat is partial to, along with fresh tuna which is all she condescends to eat these days.
