Everything but drums eh? That must be a nice creative
place to be. Like Trevor mentioned, the discordant feel
is very engaging. Great playing and tone wrapped up
in your typical nice mix. But hey, only 3:11? Could've gone
on for a while for us.

Janice and Bud,

I'm in full agreement that it could have gone on longer than 3:11. The problem is that I couldn't have gone on a second longer. The whole thing was a kind a freak accident with a little story behind it. When I was sixteen, I washed dishes to buy my first good guitar: A Guild Starfire in cherry red. I loved that thing and foolishly gave it away. I've missed it ever since, but in the interim Guild had died and been reborn at least 32 times. Recently, I decided I had to have something like the Starfire back and asked my buddy Mark Campellone http://www.mcampellone.com/home.htm , one of the elite guitar builders, to make me a black, thin hollow body guitar. For the hell of it, I went on line, typed in Guild and found what you see here. An exact recreation of the original Starfire in black. Then I saw an archtop jazz box that replicates Guild's original flagship Artist Award model. I got 'em both for less than half of what I would have had to pay Mark for one guitar. Then I endured the long wait for delivery.

They arrived last Tuesday. I pulled out the Starfire and the feeling of having it my hands again can't be described. My head exploded with ideas. I sat down and ripped off the Law and Order theme based on a version I got from a TV themes website. I did virtually no editing and posted it. I only noticed that it was quite short afterward, but this was one of those rare moments that I dare not tamper with. I think I packed everything I could into those 3:11.

I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you for your generous words.

Dean

Awesome, great tune! I dream of this bass tone... Are you the guy behind the DAW too? Your guitar tone and playing are amazing, congrats!

Aurelio,

Thanks, man. Yeh, I'm actually the guy behind everything except the drums. And isn't that a great sounding bass? Originally I was going to use a fretless on this one, but I found a really terrific sounding synthetic bass. I almost can't believe we've reached the point where a synthetic instrument can sound better than the real thing. It hasn't happened yet with horns, but that day cannot be far. I don't know how to feel about it. It's kind of scary.

In my case, I learned how to play the real instruments because it was some time during the Pleistocene era and there were no DAWs, no BIAB, just sabre-toothed tigers and wooly mammoths chasing me on my way to school. With all this tech stuff, will any kid ever take up, say, the trumpet or trombone or learn to be a jazz guitarist? Or a real baterista?

Hey Dawg,

Thanks for that. This all came together in one day, when my new instrument arrived. Actually, my new instrument is a perfect reproduction by Guild of my oldest instrument, my first good guitar, which I foolishly gave away and pined for ever since: A Guild Starfire. This one is black. Having played a lot of instruments in the interim, I never realized how great that guitar was. Guild has died and been reborn God knows how many times. In this incarnation, they're making the guitars in Korea and they are turning out beautifully made instruments.

Thanks Josie. I'm glad you had a chance to listen. I was trying to think of some hip TV themes and I seemed to recall that Streets of San Francisco had one.

When I went to the TV themes website, instead of the theme, I heard an automated voice announce that CBS had demanded its removal. Then a light bulb went off and I remembered Law and Order. Do you know that there must be at least 25 different Law and Order themes? There's several for every spinoff: Special Victims, California, Law and Order Paris, etc.

Very well done, Dean.

Impressive how the various layered themes (and textures) of the composition intermingle - and the whole remains "accessible".

That is a super cool bass sound.

Hey Greg,

Wow! It's hard to come back from a compliment like that. You have my deepest bow. Pat Marr and I had a real LOL-a-thon going over that flame a while back. I tried to convince him that it isn't a magic power at all, but a glitch that I used to be able to control - for instance, I would light my cigars with it - but as I've gotten older, it's just one more organ system that's become erratic. Embarrassing. Even dangerous, like the time I was reading the paper in the tub and, to accompany my little glass of bourbon, I went to light up my cigar ... I don't think I have to say any more.

I also recounted to Pat how it is I came in possession of this trait. I won't go into it and you wouldn't believe it anyway.

Thanks for that over-the-top boost my friend.

Now, what I was really hoping to hear is the workaround chord I suggested in the diagram turned out to be useful. Of course, whether that particular voicing will work inside the song is your call. As far as the "clash" goes, I don't hear it because my ears are used to hearing, say, the mi7 played by the bass. You can walk the bass all the way down just as it stands. I'm really not sure what folks are hearing, only that it isn't familiar.

Very, very nice, love the layering. I'm especially intrigued about how the drum track lays in the mix, its so clear and distinct. How did you do that?
