Is it possible to specify a single part to apply a hold to, or does the hold have to apply to all parts?

Thanks Hi pax-eterna Welcome to the forum. You can specify parts that are not part of the held chord, by entering their corresponding letter following the ellipsis (...) E.g. C...b will hold all instruments except the bass C...bd will hold all instruments but play the bass and drums Does this answer your question OK? Trev

And to add to the confusion, the exclusions are based on the BIAB legacy track names (Bass, Piano, Drums, Guitar, and Strings), which may or may not correspond to the instruments displayed on your screen.
If you look at the radio buttons across the top of the screen, you will see the legacy order of:
Master, Bass, Piano, Drums, Guitar, Strings, Melody and Soloist. Master, Melody, and Soloist do NOT respond to the holds and shots command.
So even if the Bass track shows a Viola playing, you would still enter:
C...b to hold everything except the Viola (bass track).
Clear as mud?
We're hoping this confusion will be cleared up in the next version of BIAB. It is a holdover from the way tracks used to be named, and the new way which displays the instrument name instead of the track name.

Don't run screaming from the room because of this. If you don't rename the tracks, and don't load other RealTracks, the track name letters remain the same. Even if you do load other RealTracks and the first letter of the track changes, you can always rename it back. And I think (!) there is a setting to prevent the switch - will look for it.
EDIT: here it is: Preferences, Display. Uncheck "Show Custom Track Labels and Descriptions" (second from the bottom in BIAB 2015 for Windows).

And to add one other item here, if you go to the Chord Settings screen (Alt-F5), there is also a checkbox to reverse the behavior.
Normally with shots, rests, and holds, the track letters that appear after the dots are excluded from the shot, rest, or hold command.
If you press Alt-F5 (after selecting the chord you want to change), you can check the box that says, "Excluded instruments should rest". Regenerate the song, and you will now find that the instruments after the dots are the ones resting and the other instruments are playing.
Unfortunately, there is no indication on the chord grid screen that you have done it this way, so you'll have to keep track of it.

That's exactly what I did here in this song http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13216873I wanted the drums to play through while the other instruments stopped. As pointed out above, just add the letter to the end of the chord C...dand you can add multiple letters to have them exempt from the hold. Essentially the hold says... hold everything dot dot dot... except.... drums, bass, etc.... so to stop the drums in a hold you add letters for everything else but not the drums.
