I have three computers a older AMD XP machine, a new 32 bit Vista and a 64 bit Vista (both i7 chip) both Home Premium.

1. B&B will not run on the 64 bit Vista, I take it that this is acknowledged even when a compatibility wizard is used.
2. On the Vista 32 B&B runs OK , however, when I press play it always comes up with the message “ Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth is used by another program. If I tick “Keep driver open” and then Close it plays OK. I have the VSX Dxi clicked on and enabled. I also keep getting “Warning: Your current drum kit has no note etc” with subsequent messages for the bass drum, hi-hat etc. How do I turn this off or correct it. What of the Wavetable message?
3. On the XP I get the same message about the drum parts. Strange since when first loaded up there were no messages and everything worked OK on this machine.

I am running B&B from the external disc with Everything Pak. The sound comes from the internal Gigabyte motherboard on the 32 bit Vista machine.

Hello Frank,

1. Band-in-a-Box *should* run on 64-bit Vista. Can you describe exactly what is happening there? Note: the VSC synth doesn't work on 64-bit OS.

There are a couple ways to fix this. One is to make sure Band-in-a-Box is closed, then delete the file MySetup.dk from the Band-in-a-Box folder (usually C:\bb). You can find the file easily by sorting the files in the bb folder by date modified, then it will be near the top.

Do you have any other MIDI Output Drivers available other than "No MIDI/Sound", "MIDI Mapper", and "GS Wavetable"? If you do, select it (even though you are using DXi synth) and the problem should go away. If you don't, are you using ASIO or MME audio drivers? This setting is found in Opt.-Preferences-Audio. If all else fails, you could disable the GS Wavetable completely in Windows. There is a simple registry edit to do this, instructions can be found with a Google search (but note the dangers of messing up the registry).

That's strange - we see that message on occasion, but it is not too common. Perhaps you copied your bb folder to the computer, so it is using the same settings files. Solution is to delete the mysetup.dk file, or unselect and re-select your synth/soundcard in the MIDI Driver Setup.

Thanks for your advice Andrew.

My further experimentation:
On the Vista 64 machine (which has 6GB memory) B&B and Vista64 seems to work without the VST/Dxi using the Midi driver but with any Real Tracks produces an error indicating that the beatmap BT0 is incorrect which results in a lock up.

Also clicking the icon for either B&B or Real Band on the external “Everything Pak” gives an error(s) although clicking on the icons on the desktop will make them run. The errors when attempting to run from the PG external disc are numerous such as:

For Real Band
a)Your computer crashed last time you ran RealBand
b)Cannot create file OrigTB.ini
c)List index out of bounds
d)Access violation etc

For B&B
a) Band in Box has stopped working etc

Note that I have no problems running the programs from the icons on the PG external disc on the Vista 32 machine.

I have seemed to overcome the missing drum note messages in the XP and Vista comps, don’t ask me how, but they no longer appear ??? The wavetable message still appears on the Vista 32 comp but I will now look into this.

By Jingo all this negative talk!! For all who are reading this and do not have B&B and Real Band believe me these programs once up and running are stupendous! Especially with the Realtracks and Realdrums, a massive quantum jump over what B&B could produce prior to 2008.5. Simply outstanding. Thanks Peter and the team!.

Cheers Frank

One other item is that on the Vista 32 comp when I exit B&B the desktop appears but then a message saying B&B stopped working
Vista is working on the problem ??

Ok -- these errors are most likely due to User Account Control being enabled - it doesn't allow the program to write files to the USB drive. The easiest solution is to turn User Account Control off (Control panel - user accounts...). If you don't want to turn UAC off, then it is best to install the programs on your internal hard drive. You can leave the RealTracks on the USB drive, and just point Band-in-a-Box to a custom RealTracks folder on that drive. If you still get the bt0 error when you run Band-in-a-Box like this, you can solve it by updating to a recent build of 2009.

This error happens on some computers, we aren't sure why - it is harmless, try to ignore it.

On the Vista 64 bit and 32 bit comps I have now transferred the PGMUSIC folder to the computer as indicated in the PG disc instructions and your comments. B&B works OK now with Realtracks and Realdrums. I was still getting a warning in B&B that the MS wavetable was being used by another program.!? When hitting Play. (on both Vista comps).

So first on the Vista 64 bit comp I went to the vsc install folder (c:/bb/vsc/vsc_installs ) and ran VSC-Dxi_setup program. It initially gives an error but Vista comes back with the option of setting with new settings. Clicking this option it loaded OK.
Now in the MIDI driver menu in B&B I then set the sound card as - Roland VSC-Dxi - without ticking the - Use VSC-Dxi synth - and low and behold the message no longer appears and I am getting the B&B instruments to play OK !!.

So the Vista 64 bit comp is now up and running. Great.

On the Vista 32 bit when I run the VSC-Dxi_setup program I do not get the initial error message and it loads OK. Following the same procedure above and it yields the same results.

Cheers. FK
