A buddy of mine used to gig the cruise ships for years. They provided the PA system. For the last few years he was there they provided the Bose system and he loved it.

Very small, yet full sounding and powerful enough to handle the small to medium sized rooms.

Not cheap, but most good gear isn't. But good gear is worth the price. At least, that has been my experience.
