+1 for Bob (90db) who commented about the 1/8" mini jack that laptops and MP3 players have. I do anything I can to avoid using those. The are not only noisy as he said, but over time they often break. They aren't terribly secure, either - they are easily pulled out giving a big 'scratch and whump' sound. Yes, I know...

When I have to perform alone live, I use a digital player with a digital output, and play .WAV files. That can go into my amp or a soundboard as needed.

If you do have to use an 1/8" output jack, try to find a player that has a "Line Out" jack rather than "Headphone Out" jack. It's a much better match for an amp, level and impedance-wise.
