BIAB 2015, win 7 Home Prem

I have been trying to work an export-to-audio problem out since yesterday evening as I had it planned in to 2 gigs this weekend, one being a Children In Need event, which UK folks on here will know about.

Looks like I have to abandon that part within BIAB however as I am completely scratching my head by now!

I have created a 9.5 min piece for behind a Contemporary Dance performance. It uses Exotic.sty "straight" with just a synth bass added. The voices variously "mute" and "normal" through the piece to reflect the changing choreography. Nothing is complex.

The last 40 seconds or so increases tempo by 5 bpm every 8 bars and for the last 15 seconds every 4 bars, as the choreography intensifies approaching a final resolve.

It all plays fine in BIAB, saves as sgu okay, re-opens and plays-through perfectly, and I was happy to rest it 24 hours and take a last listen afresh last night in case I wanted to make a final tweak before exporting it as audio and either burning a CD or putting an mp3 on a memory stick.

So I "exported as wav" same as always from the button on the "file" ribbon, and almost didn't bother to listen to it. But I did just to check, and what was actually exported was an audio file with no tempo changes at all just Even throughout, plus from the 9 min 8 sec point the volume suddenly dropped hugely, I'd say to one-tenth!

Good job I didn't just plug the mp3 in to the sound system and hit play and have the performance fall apart at the end when the track suddenly didn't support the rising choreography and the punch-ending, let alone be whisper-quiet for the final section! Would have been very embarrassing for everyone frown

I expect to be able to get around it easily enough for now using a different DAW or even just Audacity to recreate a form of crescendo and to restore the volume. It might even be possible to hook my laptop in and simply play it direct in BIAB, though I need to check on connectivity etc as I don’t know just now what is being provided.

But that’s not the issue. I want to fix it for tomorrow’s presentation if that’s possible, and certainly for a third and final outing next Wednesday evening.

I have tried closing BIAB down and relaunching, have tried closing the computer down and restarting. I have BIAB on an external HD so have also tried installing it on my C drive to see if somehow that made it ok. No change with any.

I have tried exporting the separate tracks independently so I could recombine them if they were okay in isolation, but all were affected exactly the same.

I have exported as other audio file formats, still no change in tempo, still volume-drop.

I have exported via File > Export Song As Audio > Export As, no difference.

Does the same in RB too, plays fine but exports broken!

So it appears there’s something stopping BIAB exporting what it plays how it plays it. Mute and restore is fine, some formatting is active like “a” and “b” parts at part markers, but not changes in tempo.

Plus it just cuts volume from 10 to 1, which doesn’t even coincide with any other instruction-point so doesn’t seem to be two conflicting instructions butting heads.

Has anyone had this problem and worked it out? Or can someone more expert suggest something I maybe am just not aware of that needs to be checked is set correctly in order for BIAB to “see” tempo/volume formatting on exporting?

Any thoughts or useful guidance would be very appreciated.

EDIT:

Just "Returned to factory settings", also checked for update ... still exports audio without tempo changes, and cuts volume same.

Head > Brick Wall!

So, I just tried this, using EXOTIC1.sty (I couldn't find just EXOTIC.sty), which is a MIDI style. I inserted tempo changes (speeding up) towards the end of the file.

If I select "File, Export to WAV" to create a stereo wav file, it did not include the tempo changes.

However, if instead, I selected "Audio, Render to WAV" to create the file, that resulting file did include the tempo changes.

Sounds like a bug that needs reporting.

Yes, it sounds like it needs reporting as you say, however, nice bit of detective work there John, and hopefully resolves the O/P's immediate problem.

John:

Good Morning, and thank you so much!

I found your reply in the way-too-early hours when getting home after the Event, which had a social gathering afterward which was both successful and well-attended and just kept on going smile

By the time I got back I was on a direct line from door to bed as I needed to rise early today also, so whilst wanting to check here for any response I couldn't do anything to see what the result might be for me, and then leave a response accordingly.

So I am pleased to say I got the same results following the "Audio > render" pathway, thank you.

Though at the same time I am a little embarrassed as well blush because that should have occurred to me to look for anyway. But it didn't, and I suppose that at first I was just looking at my *normal* Export Song/Audio steps and alternative approaches and than getting buried by fault-chasing diligence in just that direction, by which time I was then too close to see sideways much at all.

I got around things for last evening with a tweak from Audacity to create the speed-up, though not exactly what I had in my head, well, to my ears anyway smile

Tonight however I will now be using the *proper* version! I know I will be asked to pass-on the thanks of all the others too, so do so very happily now.

The audio-drop still existed however on the couple of trials I just ran, and rigidly at 9'08" even if I falsely make the total runtime longer or shorter than its normal length. It doesn't therefore seem triggered by any compositional input.

I can't think why it happens, but fortunately the timing has worked out very well insofar as the speed-up has pulled the total run-time down to what it should be, and the audio-drop has landed literally a breath after the piece finishes, now at 9'07"instead of 9'33"without the tempo-changes ... couldn't be much closer!!

So other than a click in the immediate silence, which I can easily eliminate (though hopefully it would be buried beneath tumultuous applause anyway smile ) there is now no significant effect on the work itself.

Just before this reply, and before knowing precisely where the audio-drop would actually fall, I ran quickly down to the Venue to let everyone know that I would be using the original audio tonight and Wednesday ... I instructed the Company to dance louder as a precaution "in case it still clipped a couple of seconds", which raised some smiles once it was realised that was a joke smile

So, I am happy that it turned out to be simply (?) a glitch rather than senility or brainfade smile ... and yes I will report it to PG so it can be looked at and avoid someone else going in the same loop.

Is that just an email to "support@ ..", or is there a specific reporting procedure for this kind of thing? Direct to Peter G?

I'd like that audio-drop's cause identified at some point however just for peace of mind ... I have BIAB'd songs and tracks up to 12 minutes in the past with no such effect.

Though, on thinking about it I can't now be sure I actually exported or saved the song/audio on some/any of them, so maybe the condition is there just not encountered if I only played in/through BIAB direct ... or just saved the work as a sgu file anyway. I'll explore that in the next couple of days.

Again many thanks, and also to VideoTrack for your kind interest.

Without the source file, I can't help with the glitch, but I'm glad the tempo fix worked for you.

I export all my BIAB files as wave files. I'm just wondering if it is better to use render than the Export song dialog box (sorry working from memory here). Originally, I used render, but recently I'd switched to Export Song as Audio. I hadn't noticed any difference. What's the advantage of exporting over rendering or vice versa? Recently, I noticed some of my backing tracks seem to do strange things to create stereo. I only noticed as one of the speakers in the car is not working and I sing along to my backing tracks as I drive to work (lol). Some of the backing had vanished but only on certain songs. I don't mess with the default panning in BIAB, but I guess I'll have to go back and check how everything is set up. Advice from more experienced renderers/exporters greatly appreciated.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
