If you need to generate original, royalty free music for a project (home video, slide show, ceremonies, dance routines, etc.) you should check out the SoundTrack option in Band-in-a-Box! It only takes a few seconds to generate an audio clip!

Go to Window | Generate SoundTrack to access this feature. Here you can choose a genre, style variation, which tracks to include (Bass, Piano, RealDrums), a desired duration (if one is required), whether to include a drum count-in, and more!

Once the song is generated, if you like what you hear you can save the SoundTrack as either a .WAV, .WMA, .MP3, .MP4 or .M4A file!

This feature was added to Band-in-a-Box for Windows with Version 2007.

Thanks Callie! Interesdting feature. But is there any way to restrict it to using RealTracks instead of MIDI?

Just finished my first little movie and uploading it to YouTube tonight using a custom, Royalty free BIAB 2015 Soundtrack! (with proper credits of course)

Thanks for the tip Callie. I'll post the YouTube link in the Best of YouTube forum.

Hi JohnJohnJohn,

After playing with it for a while, and talking with the Tech department, it looks like just the RealDrums for now. You can always add RealTracks afterwards though!

Thanks,
Callie

Regarding JohnJohnJohn's statement; "But is there any way to restrict it to using RealTracks instead of MIDI?"

I understand when I use the upper portion of the Soundtrack page and select the genre and style or choose a Soundtrack song or Realdrum song that these styles are midi styles.

However, when I select a demo song or existing song (including my original compositions or Artist performance tracks), if the demo or existing song uses RealTracks, then my generated Soundtrack uses the RealTracks of the selected song as well as the tempo, key and chords. I can set the length, tempo and duration of my Soundtrack as well as select or deselect which tracks to include or exclude.

This leaves me not understanding Callie's response; "After playing with it for a while, and talking with the Tech department, it looks like just the RealDrums for now. You can always add RealTracks afterwards though!"

So, it seems if JohnJohnJohn wants a Soundtrack with RealTracks he could simply use the buttons to select a demo or existing song with Realtracks rather than use the Genre/style or Load Soundtrack button. I think that would be appropriate since the Soundtrack page provides buttons to access these songs.

Hi Charlie,

Color me wrong! I had tried the same thing and it didn't work for me. So, with that in mind I apologize for my inadequate response!

No need for any apology Callie. I'm glad you posted the tip! It has become my favorite since I learned of it from your post. It is a really great feature to explore so many of the demos and artist performances, Riffs, midi and fake books that I had not taken time in the past to pay much attention to. I've been the kid in the candy store all week.

The Soundtrack feature may also help a forum member in another thread who has the MAC version and is hoping that a PC version member can get the instrument list and chord, key and tempo information for a demo style that he wants to use but cannot access the information in his MAC version. It should load easily in Soundtrack. I've not heard if he has been able to successfully do this yet, but hoping it will work for him.

Soundtrack or a regular Style alike, I end up changing the instruments to what I want them to be (RTs), no matter what. So, in essences, I create new styles based on an existing one and have my own style variation of the original .. again, no matter if it's the Soundtrack feature or picking a style from the thousands available.

That's the beauty of BIAB ... you can make everything your own....

Cheers,
Mike

As suspected, not applicable to Mac versions - and this despite it being, and I quote, "added to Band-in-a-Box for Windows with Version 2007"!
I wonder if the PG staff is realising how extremely alienating it is to us when they make these "Tip" posts (read:brags!) on some nifty thing we still don't get but has been on the WinBlowz since **** forever!!

I seriously doubt they have smirk

Your desire for a similar feature should be posted in the MAC wishlist forum.

It is my impression this is a little known feature even to PC owners and Callie was giving us a reminder it's there. I've had the PC version for years and had never explored the Soundtrack feature, nor seen it discussed here on the windows version forum. It is a cool feature and well worth your time to request it be added to the MAC version. One can speculate that such lack of discussion or questions may have appeared to PGMusic the Soundtrack feature did not offer enough value to enough people using the MAC version to warrant engineering it into the MAC version.

I do understand and appreciate your frustration that presently there are substantial and minor variations between the two programs and as acknowledgment to your rightful frustration, will place a request for Soundtrack in the MAC wishlist forum.

I can't help you there, simply because I'm not you and you're not me. I just know it made every bit of sense in my head, at least when I wrote it. But maybe I can clarify a few things:

To me it's rather a given that us having the same features as you is desired by default. This should not need saying nor asking for.
Having said that, I see no need to address your next paragraph (gives same answer) and will skip ahead a bit.

That in turn makes me wonder why offer this faux-pas "choice" in the first place if, as you're suggesting here, one really has no real choice due to the vast gap and less than effective attempts at providing equal options (i.e. a real choice between the two). I maintain that once they did decide to go down our road too, they cannot be surprised when they're then expected to actually commit. If they're finding it less than worth it, I say shut it down, stick to the safer road and drop the pretence of choice. I most certainly wouldn't be the one who moans over lacking salt for the hard boiled egg when there's no egg on offer in the first place. That would indeed be "illogical".

You presume I walked into this section of the forum intentionally. I did not, I came here from the Front Page of PG Music, which also means this "Tip" was rather literally staring me in the face. I most certainly did not purposely pick this forum to barge in & wreak havoc, or what have you. I actually didn't even know what particular section I was in until you told me, as I came here straight from the front page, like I say. Once you're inside a thread, you don't see which part of it you're in until you leave the thread to the Index.
Then again, whining about the inferiority issue in the designated Mac section is also quite the "preaching to the converted" thing to do anyway, for everyone in there already knows (and agrees). It's in the 1st Class section where the awareness must be raised, for that's where the power of change lies.

A part of me almost went "Did he just give me the I-know-how-you-feel treatment", but deep breath and I'll just be glad that's one more of the 1st Class awareness raised. Thank you for the gesture.
Hopefully I've somewhat made my post slightly less "illogical".

I still don't completely get it! laugh If I choose to Load Song Demo or Load Existing Song it seems like it does nothing more than load those songs and let me set things like tempo (but not key). How is that a "Soundtrack Generator"? I can do the exact same thing by just loading those songs in BIAB, right? Or, is it doing something else I am not understanding?

JohnJohnJohn, it's my impression the upper portion of the window is the primary feature of Soundtrack. In that portion, everything is automatic and you choose the 'song' by opening that selection and there are generic themes and moods. The major benefit of the ability to choose demo's or other songs is for the times you have a specific song in mind for a project. The fact that these songs also can contain Realtracks makes it even better.

I haven't made any soundtracks of extended length but I think Soundtrack may also effect how the sgu files repeat or loop over extended periods. Yes, you can do what it does within BIAB manually, but it does it for you automatically. Note that it alters tempo to match the length of the desired audio clip. Manually, that would by done more by trial and error for most folks.

It's just a quick, easy way to generate a soundtrack for a project that in the case of the generic home movie adds a bit of spice and otherwise, it generates background audio for projects where the audio is not a major emphasis.
