Select File > Options... > MIDI driver, and you should be able to select available options. Neither Forte or VSC (both on my computer) appear on my menu here, so I'm suspecting soft synths don't work with the program.
I am able to open the GL###.MID files with Real Band, and from there have more options for playback. Hope this helps some. I agree - great program. I'm ever so slowly trying to work my way thru it.
