Hi all,
I've been struggling with this problem for a few days now and cannot seem to figure out what the issue is. I've been running Biab for many years and use it nearly everyday. I just upgraded from 2014 to 2016. I ran the install into C:\BB and kept the default installs for everything. The bbw.exe file is set to run as administrator. Now when I click the new icon to start Biab, I get a message box saying 'Band-In-A-Box Application has stopped working'. 'Close Program' is the only option so it never starts up.

Realband 2016 starts and runs ok. I've tried multiple reboots and disabling things that run at startup. Have also tried installing Biab 2016 into a different directory on the C drive with no luck.

If I go back to Biab 2014, everything works fine on this PC. I have uninstalled my antivirus and still no joy with Biab 2016. The only way I can get it to start is by running the PC in safe mode. I talked to the help desk about this problem and they have assisted me over the phone trying to figure out what the issues are.

I know this forum has some very smart people and am just wondering if anyone has ideas I could try.

I'm running Windows 7 home premium on an HP desktop. Running Biab and Realband on the C:\ drive. Default installs for Biab and Realband.

Thank you for your help!

Try deleting the file intrface.bbw in the /bb folder. Note the spelling with no "e".
Don't worry about backup; BIAB will recreate it.

Thank you Matt, I tried deleting the intrface.bbw and there was another called mysetup. (I don't recall the extension) that the helpdesk had me delete before. Neither of those made any difference. Now that those files are gone, they do not regenerate. I think it is because the program does not get that far when I try to launch it.

How did you revert back to 2014, which you say runs properly?

Also, make sure you are running the most recent patch of 2014 before upgrading to 2016 (sometimes it makes a difference).

Make absolutely sure that everything is running from the c:\bb folder. Double check that the icon on your desktop points to c:\bb\bbw.exe.

I updated mine on top of 2015, so I'm not sure what happens with 2014. I do know that I had some weird problems with StyleMaker after installing 2016, but re-installing 2015 (from a zip file, not a cold install), and then upgrading to 2016 fixed it. It's possible something got corrupted. Maybe try downloading the main BIAB installer again from your PGMusic account and running it. Then make sure you have the latest patch build installed before actually running the program.

You may have already tried those things, but hopefully something will work.

Hello John,
The helpdesk folks sent me the 2014 install package so I created a new folder called bb_2014 on my C drive for that as a test. I can run 2014 from that folder without a problem. If I can't get this fixed, I plan on running the 2014 install into my c:/bb folder just so I can work on my songs again.

Yes, I had downloaded the most recent patch for 2014 before upgrading.

I verified the icon points to c:\bb\bbw.exe and starts in c:\bb with admin privileges.

I just finished downloading the installer again and will try reinstalling into c:\bb and will apply the latest build or patch before testing it.

Thanks much for the ideas! I'll update the forum as this progresses.

Good luck. You've done everything correctly; it's too bad you are having this trouble.

Since you are downloading, did Support give you a way to compare Checksums on the file, to ensure a successful download?

By the way, you are correct, those files won't be rebuilt until BIAB starts, so that's not a problem.

Safe mode works? I wonder what that clue means. Try Running as Administrator?

Ok, I got a new download of bandinabox_realband_2016pro.exe I renamed my original bb folder to bb_original and created a new c:\bb folder to test with.

I installed bandinabox_realband_2014_pro.exe into the new bb folder and tested Biab 2014 from that folder and it launched and worked ok. (This is the latest build 386.)

Next I installed the new download of 2016pro.exe into that same c:\bb folder along with realband_2016_build2_patch.exe and bb2016_update_build427.exe After installing these files I tried launching bbw.exe from c:\bb and run as admin but still have the same error and the program never runs.

Does anyone know if there is a simple way to uninstall Biab and Realband so I could just start over? I have about 200 songs that I've done with this software and sure don't want to lose anything.

I'm thinking if I could do a clean uninstall of the programs and then load everything up again it might reset whatever the hell is wrong. Since I seem to be the only one having this problem, it must be something related to my PC.

The usual cause for something like this would be an incomplete install, or a corrupted install (damaged files)

Thanks Peter!
That's what I'm thinking also. I plan to uninstall BiaB and Realband to see if I can get a clean install.

I have disks all the way back to Biab 2008, do you know how far back I will have to go when I reinstall everything? I don't have a lot of extra stuff, a couple of mega paks I purchased over the years and that is about it.
Thank you!

Worst case, get the program on an external drive?

But did you consult Support about ensuring the downloads are valid?

Hi Matt, no I couldn't reach tech support this evening. I did Run the uninstall for Biab and then uninstalled the other things it mentioned in a support file I found about uninstalling. I downloaded a new install file and tried loading that into two fresh directories c:\bb and c:\realband but I still get the same symptom. I cannot launch Biab 2016, Realband 2016 runs but not Biab 2016. Running both as admin from a total fresh install this is what I get.

I have had something similar a while back. Just install over the current installation one more time. I have experienced that positive effect with a second install.

But since you have experienced the bad behaviour at least twice, there is a chance that at least one of the installation files is damaged.

Since RealBand works, take your working installation of BIAB 2014, copy it into a kind of a backup folder. Now you have the possibility to install installation file after installation file and test after each installation. If you have isolated a damaged file, as long as you have the untouched backup installation to reestablish a clean installation base, you may try to test with all the other installation files.

There are about eight installation files for BIAB 2016 and the 49Pak. So you should be able to identify the problem rather fast.

Thank you CHinCH, Yes I have tried re-running the install to no effect.

Just for giggles I uninstalled Biab as per the instructions then I connected an external hard drive and installed a fresh download file bandinabox_realband_2016_pro.exe to the external drive J:\bb and J:\Realband. Tried running as an admin from the external drive and no luck. Same problem as before, the Biab 2012 program will not run. Error is 'Band-in-a-Box Application has stopped working' Close program is the only option.

Just to check; has BIAB2016 been confirmed working with windows7?

Or are all those who have it working using it on windows8 or 10?

I'm on windows7 home-premium myself, so this issue is a concern to me too (I currently use BIAB2014 and are thinking about upgrading to BIAB2016, but of course not if it doesn't support windows 7)

If memory serves, several beta testers use Windows 7. This problem was not raised.

My money is still on a corrupt download, which can be diagnosed by PG Music Support via file size/checksums.

GHinCH,
I'm only loading the first install file for testing, not all 8 of them. I'm just trying to get past the launch error of the program.

I took the external hardrive and connected it to another desktop running Win7 with the same antivirus and Biab 2016 ran with no problem. Also tested the external hardrive on a laptop Win7 and that worked also. This verifies that the install file isn't corrupt I would say.

It seems like there is something on my original desktop that is making my life miserable for sure.

Jel,
I think this is an issue with my machine or other software conflicts running on my PC perhaps. I don't think others are having this same problem.
