Thanks Pat. This is brilliant news. It'll take me a while to get my head around it all, and I'm sure I'll need to ask you questions. I'm optimistic that it will work for me as I've seen a video of the Voicelive 2 being driven in real time from a DAW. The Nova accepts and transmits program change quite flexibly as well.

Ha! It's only taken me two days, but I now have the TC Electronic Nova Multi effects unit changing patches and effects within patches. It's so cool automatically turning overdrive and delay on and off and jumping around the patches. I found step edit in melody the easiest way to do it. You have to regenerate to get it to kick in. I'm using the melody track and midi channel 16.

AWESOME! I know you'll love to perform without being distracted by stomping and tweaking.
Did you say you perform on StreetJelly? If so, post the time and date of your next performance. I want to see the net result of having an automated sound tech working for you. ;-)
I usually play on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10 am Hong Kong time. That's Friday and Saturday evening in the US. Not sure if I'll have it implemented by then though. I keep changing technology and then catching up on streetjelly, (as do they) but it gets better - 2 steps forward one step back etc. My village has some internet issues which seem to cause problems as well with lots of drop out during the shows. Ironic in a place with 100 mb everywhere
If not streetjelly, I'll record a couple of songs and put them up on youtube. Good for folks to see midi automation in BIAB (Even if not to see me ) Voicelive 2 is being rather stubborn but hopefully it will eventually work.

Came home and immediately got the Voicelive 2 to respond to program and cc changes from BIAB 2016. I've got it on 'throu' from the Nova to the Voicelive 2, but I have a Yamaha midi spliter somewhere that I'll use as it will be a little faster.
A USB foot switch? At the moment I just put my songs in a playlist as they are wave files. I was going to use Conductor or Jukebox in a similar way but with my BIAB songs, but a USB switch might be a bit more versatile. Does Band in a Box recognise a USB foot switch or am I missing the point?

Cool! I have my devices chained together via MIDI thru.. as long as they're all on separate channels, it works fine.

far as I know, ALL programs recognize this kind of foot switch. Basically, it works like a keyboard, except you configure each pedal to send whatever keystroke you want.
Since I use it inside RealBand, I have the buttons set for the keystrokes required to OPEN a new song, to PLAY the loaded song, and to SAVE the current song.
The reason I have it set to SAVE is because I use the COMMENTS screen for my lyrics and chord sheet, and I need to save the song the same way I want it to open (with the lyrics covering the menu). The simplest way to save a song while the menu is covered up is to use the foot switch. That way, when I develop my songs, I can make a lot of quick saves without jumping through hoops.
Even if you use a playlist to automatically stream your WAVs, a you could set it to pause between songs until you send a keystroke from the pedal... that would give you time between songs to make announcements or whatever.
But... if you stream wav files, you lose the ability to send CCs to your devices. That's why I use RB as my delivery engine.
Yes, the wave files in a play list was what I was doing before I realised I could use midi cc and patch changes. Hopefully, they will become merely a backup.
I'll have a look at a USB foot switch eventually. HK is the land of cheap computer peripherals.
I have a very strange situation happening now with my midi program changes and cc messages. I have one file made from putting a few chords into a BIAB style just with midi sounds and no real tracks that works fine changing patches and effects within patches on both units, but... no other songs work. None of my actual backing tracks.
I don't think it's a global setting as the file still works in BIAB. It could be a song setting that I have switched on somewhere in every song except that one or it could be the fact that I'm only using Realtracks within BIAB.
Does it matter which track I add the midi commands to? I've been using the melody track mainly as it's empty. Does the track have to be told specifically to use midi? I noticed that the Realtracks I've used so far have midi Realcharts attached. Should I somehow zap them? Any ideas gratefully received. Puzzled.

What are you trying to use currently? RealBand or BiaB? Pat mentioned success with RB, you mentioned BiaB .. they are different and require different methods.
Of course, I prefer RB methods ..

Hi. I'm using BIAB. Pat mentioned earlier that it works in both products, and it is working fine in BIAB on one file. That is the puzzle. None of my songs or any others I have made so far seem to work. I'm sure it will work or should, just not sure what I need to change in my settings. I'll get there.

let's start with the MIDI setup: check to see how your setup compares with the attached graphic
Yes, my VSTi/DXi synth is checked. I'll try unchecking it tonight. I guess that means no DXI synth but not a big problem as I use realtracks. But surely if one song is working ok, it's not that? Isn't that a global setting? Can it be turned on and off at an individual song level? Anyway, I'll try it tonight.

if you aren't using MIDI tracks, no problem unchecking it. If you DO need to use a soft synth AND send MIDI to external devices, a forum member created a plugin to make that work. I'll see if I can find the thread in which he explained how it works, and post a link to it.
But before I complicate the issue, let's see if unchecking that box helps.

There is a Band-in-a-Box Wiki that has the information Pat is talking about. There is a link to the Wiki ++ HERE ++
yer on yer own from there. Many (including me) found joy using this in BiaB, but simply moving to RB instead eliminates the basic need. /thanks PWarren, hats off

Thanks for the wiki. Sorry, but I'm writing from memory so it's not that accurate. I now have the Voicelive 2 working changing patches and stomp buttons, but on a different midi channel than the one I chose. I took the Nova right out as BIAB wasn't doing anything at all on it's channel. I had the Voicelive 2 set to Channel 16 and it was accepting Channel 4 commands aimed at the Nova for a while. Anyway, It was all working fine on the Voicelive 2 and then suddenly it threw in a completely new patch at the start of the song (I can see no reference to it in melody step input.) which threw everything out of sync, but at least it was working on one of my songs. Nice to see it choose the right patch, bring harmonies on in the right place and delay popping on and off at the end of phrases. (Albeit only briefly). Other people do seem to be having issues with 2016 and midi, so it may not be me doing anything wrong. I'll keep messing around until I sort it out. I noticed it seems to follow the midi channels from the default GM2 midi instruments dialog box which might explain why it didn't like my choice of midi channel. I'm not too concerned about the Nova Guitar Effects as I only use 3 programs - rhythm, soft, rhythm blues & RnR, and lead at the moment.:-) Even I can hit those. Now if I can just get a lighting rig and my midi guitar linked in..... I'm getting excited and it's starting to feel a lot like Xmas....

Hey, thanks to Jim and Bob for posting those other links! I appreciate that!
When you mentioned the voicelive is working, but on a different channel than the one you chose... it reminded me of another piece to the puzzle.
BIAB has its own "standardized" MIDI channel setup, a carryover from the pre-real track days when people needed a way to make multiple projects always send the same instruments to the same MIDI channels. I'm not sure what the hierarchy is in BIAB, whether these channels override channels you declare elsewhere or not... but it's something to be aware of. You may see something in this that explains unexpected MIDI channel activity. You can find this dialog as follows: OPTIONS > PREFERENCES > CHANNELS
Yes, this is the dialog box I was looking at and wondering about. Melody is on 4 and everything i put into melody track came in on 4 even when I had set it to channel 16 in the Melody step entry menu. Perhaps problem solved. Use soloist for one and melody for the other with different channel numbers? That patch might be what's leaping in at the start.

I circled THRU CHANNEL because when I'm sending MIDI data to one device, I typically make sure this dialog shows the receiving channel of that device as the THRU channel. You may have to switch channel numbers around to make it happen.
If sending data to more than one device, you need more than one channel dedicated to MIDI.
================update===== also notice the the 3rd column in the dialog is PATCH... if there is a value in that field, that patch number WILL get sent to whatever channel is in the first column
There is also other midi data for volume etc being sent to each of the channels in this dialog... upshot is, if you want total control of what gets sent when, you probably want to clear the data from these boxes
(or, use this dialog as the preferred way to send patches to your devices) Event editor gives control of the exact time the patch is sent... I think this dialog always sends it at the beginning of the song.
