I always loved songs with humming or whistling on top of the solo-player, whistling same melody as the instrument playing.. In BiaB it's not possible to use VSTi on a audio track as far as I understand, but it should be made possible, since so many RealTracks have the realcharts and it is, after all, Midi ! The only workaround I know of is to save the solotrack/Melodytrack as Midi, then open it againd and assign the track to an VSTi, and then save this track as audio, and then import this audio track to the song... Is there a better way?

If I'm not mistaken, you could export the Realchart as midi (recognising, or at least I've read here, that only the piano Realcharts will play back credibly as midi; other instrument RealCharts are really just visual aids which don't sound so hot as midi);

then close the BIB project;

open it with RealBand, drag the new midi clip into that, assign a VSTi, and then treat as normal.

You could also import the midi file to another DAW, but by not using RealBand, you'd be losing all the functionality it has in common with BIB. In other words, in RealBand you could carry on doing BIB-like things (generating / playing with / changing RealTracks etc)

About the RealTracks with notation playing back credibly as MIDI, you are correct about the piano but it's more than that. Quite a few other instruments can sound pretty good. You just have to try each one.

I have used Real Charts to create a parallel MIDI track. It won't match exactly, but it's doable.

Trygve Larson,

I believe you are combining two features which really are not related to each other in this instance.

Feature 1: RealTrack midi. PG Music has someone transcribe midi used with a Realtrack. The midi does not generate the audio, the audio was listened to and a midi transcription was created, after the fact. One of the ways the midi transcription gets used is to notate a RealChart.

Feature 2: Use a VSTi to receive midi and generate an audio output. Both Band-in-a-Box and RealBand can do this. The VSTi can be inserted into a track as an effect.

To use RealChart midi with a VSTi you will need to export a RealTrack as midi, import the midi into a new track then insert the VSTi into the new track.

BiaB is limited to eight tracks with one track reserved for drums. RealBand can have 48 tracks so it might be a better choice in this case.

Ok, thank's for suggestions guys ! Jim, u said; "export a RealTrack as midi, import the midi into a new track then insert the VSTi into the new track." Can this be done with out close BiaB first then reopen it? Can we add our own midi track to the Midi supertrack list ? Where is the midi supertrack located? Or, is it just embedded in a BiaB song file? Like in the Midi Supertrack demo folder?

Jim, u said; "export a RealTrack as midi, import the midi into a new track then insert the VSTi into the new track." Can this be done with out close BiaB first then reopen it? Yes you can. (Please note my instructions are not exact as I am not at my computer. Everthing I'm telling you is by memory so take it with a grain of salt.) Highlight the midi you want to export then you can either (a) drag the highlighted midi to the midi dropbox on the left side of the screen or (b) go to "File" then select export as midi. (a) will export to the daw dropbox folder. (b) will be saved wherever you select during the save process.

Can we add our own midi track to the Midi supertrack list ? Not that I'm aware of. The program most likely has a file that includes the name of all midi supertracks but I have no idea how to modify the list.

Where is the midi supertrack located? Not sure. Maybe anothet user can tell us.

Or, is it just embedded in a BiaB song file? Like in the Midi Supertrack demo folder? I don't think so. PG Music says you can edit a midi supertrack but I never have.

I'm not clear about what you're wanting to do. Sometime you ask about midi and other times you mention midi supertracks. Technically I'm pretty sure a midi supertrack is standard midi, it just originates from PG Music. I believe midi supertrack is a marketing name PG Music gives to midi created by an artist performance instead of the midi being created by a software program. No matter how it is created it is still midi, I think. Regular midi can be imported from wherever you store the file. I'll have to look for the path PG Music uses to store the midi supertracks.

Jim is correct. MIDI supertracks are pure MIDI. Think of it this way, RealTracks are audio recordings of a professional musician while MIDI supertracks are MIDI recordings of a professional musician.

Yes you can modify any MIDI supertracks as they are pure MIDI.

I hope this helps.

As I understand it, MIDI Super Tracks are MIDI, but are processed much like a RealTrack is processed. They use a different engine than the MIDI processed within a traditional MIDI style. Like a RealTrack, you select the MST individually, although they can be included as part of a style. BIAB recognizes the track as MIDI Super Track and handles it accordingly.

For playback, you can choose whatever MIDI device you with, to include Hi-Q patches, a general MIDI source, a VSTi or DXi, etc. You can even assign a different instrument than what was intended.

My understanding is that MIDI Super Tracks fill the need for performance style where it doesn't matter so much the instrument used (for example, a piano, for which there are excellent synths to make a piano sound). That's why you don't find guitar MST's, because they will pretty much always sound like a synth, rather than a real guitar.

Sorry for not being more clear... What I would like to do, if possible, was to assign a VSTi directly to the real track to have a synth playing over the same notes as the real instrument, by taking advantage of the fact that there in many instances actually is a realchart in that same track...as Midi. I know the way of saving the track as midi, then import it and assign the VSTi to it and save the result as audio, then import this audio into the audio track of the song... This way is a bit cumbersome, so I just wanted to make sure that there is no other way...

And, if it is not possible today, I would like to suggest it to be possible, but I guess I have to bring that suggestion to the new feature wish forum, lol...

Another way that came to my mind was to possible save the midi in the real chart as a super midi usertrack if I just would know where to save it to be included in the super midi file list...

We see frequent questions about wanting to have the great sound of a realtrack in an editable form, like MIDI. The answer is no. As john said, the midi data that accompanies some realtacks is only approximate.

I am exploring the capabilities of MIDI Supertracks lately, and am very impressed. They have some of the naturalness and musicianship of the RealTracks, and the MIDI notation is dead accurate, of course. They sound great when played through some of the Sample Tank patches. In some cases they do what I want better than Realtracks.

I would suggest to Trygve that he explore the capabilities of SMTs to do what he wants.

Maybe if more users worked with SMTs, PG would take them more seriously, and produce more of them.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
