This one has been setting on the back burner since the summer. Heaven's Angel The band is: Drums: Nashville even 8 Bass: 684 Acoustic: 405 Electric: 543 Electric: 845 B3: 686 Accordion: 1287 Accordion: 1292 Lead is me playing the Telecaster Vox and 2 BGV Heaven's Angel
Six days since I saw her seems like eternity
I can't wait to hold her hand taste her kisses set me free
Her smile kept me going, Teasing, in my dreams
When I get to hold her, moonlight magic on the breeze
Soon my waiting will be over
And I will hold her once again
Standing silent in the moonlight
Heaven's angel waits for me
Gold ring, in my pocket Giving her my best
On my knees before her, I pray to God that she says yesI was writing this from a minimalist POV... The goal was to use as few words as possible to get the story across. It was an experiment in writing. I'm also curious to see what influences you hear in this song.

Herb, This sounds great. I like the simple lyric approach and it works. This is in the style of the Mavericks. { along with Flaco Jimenez } I do have a suggestion. The chorus doesn't rhyme. The second line of the chorus could be "Again I'll hold her tenderly". sets up to rhyme with Heaven's Angel waits for me. The tele fills are just right. I can hear Raul Malo singing this, however you did a fine job. Good one! Tom

Good writing. Writing style that is minimalistic reminds me of some Buddy Holly stuff.
I agree with Tom this is most similar to The Maverics both with vocals and musical style of artists I'm familiar with.

Hi Herb,
We agree with both Tom and Charlie about the influences.
But we in our opinion the mix has a little bit too much high EQ in it, which gives it a kind of a 'midi' feel.
However, we like the song and we think it could be a nice 'Schlager".

Real nice vocals and a very enjoyable song with a full professional sound.
Yeah, Mavericks or Dwight Yoakam-ish with that Bakersfield-type sound, but unique too.
(In the intro at 00:11 or 00:12 there is a sour note, either from the bass or one of the guitars I think.)
p.s. I may have to latch on to your minimalist approach. I have a new one that is a verse/chorus/instrumental/chorus. Maybe it's finished....

I battled against the "it doesn't rhyme" and decided to let it roll. Thanks for the input and the listen.

Thanks.... yeah...I think..... I don't know the slang... "Schlager".... I was thinking it was a bit in the middle of the road regarding highs.... not exceedingly bright. Although I do like the highs of lots of things in the mix. Perhaps more so than others. Thanks for listening.

Thanks... I listened carefully to the place you mentioned. I could hear a bit of an abnormality on the computer speakers, but, going back to the wave in the DAW and then even with the cans from the lappy playing the mp3.... It was so much harder to hear. Which is why I didn't hear this in the song to start with. But I did track it down. It's coming from the accordion. That instrument is slightly out of tune with itself which is classic squeezebox/ accordion sound anyway which is why everyone loves the accordion followed closely by the bagpipes and the banjo in no particular order. ( poor attempt at humor ) I believe that's what you're hearing. I first thought it was an mp3 encoding algorithm thing, as I've run into that before in the past. But when I went to the DAW and the sound was clear.... it had to be something else. So....all that to say, try listening on some good cans and see what you hear. Thanks for listening and catching that little blurb. Good ears!!

This was an extremely successful experiment. Your vocal was perfect and your lyrics were outstanding. Nice backing tracks and mix also.
You should be vary proud of this one.

Nice song Herb!! I love the arrangement, and you did a great job on the vocal. I hear a 50's influence in it. The chord progression, melody, and tempo all have elements of that era. Also, the lyrics are sweet, romantic, and innocent, also a hallmark feel of that era. With the long held notes, I would say it would be great for a crooner-Roy Orbison comes to mind. I don't know the artists others have mention but I do hear some country/Latin influences as well. Very nicely done all around. Enjoyed it very much!! Take care. Greg

Had to listen when I read the comparison to The Mavericks.
And yup I agree but this stands out on its own.
Nice guitar fills and I agree with you re the rhyme in the verse, altho' Tom makes a valid point.
I write a lot of stuff with no rhyme and think that this makes people sit up and actually hear the words.
Good production and a great tune, was it really that long because it went so fast, a sign of a good song?

Herb I enjoyed what you did on this one. Nice rhythm and vocals. I agree with Alyn about the rhyme that it's not always necessary to have a good song.

It would have been cool to see Roy Orbison and Raul Malo on stage together. That Raul admires Roy is evident in 99% of his singing. They had a rockabilly thing going on in their earlier music but some of their later music did lean heavily towards Latin influenced music with the addition of a brass section to their songs. It's a heavy Tex-Mex flavor. For those who don't know the Mavericks.... you're missing out. Good job of capturing that Maverick sound. The accordions work well (though they sort of swamp the vocal in a couple of spots in the last chorus - particularly your title).
Good that you are experimenting to find something new. You might consider not using the same image so often in such a small space - "hold her" 3 times in the first 6 lines and "moonlight" in your chorus right after using it in the verse. You also might consider changing "On my knees" to "On one knee" - those conjure different images... The fact that you're waiting and she's waiting sort of leaves no one doing anything (except waiting). Just some thoughts.

But, but, but... he's young and in love and really really wants to "hold her"..... and it is at night..... in the moonlight..... good point on the knee thing..... I'll give you that one. Waiting.......... he's waiting to get there... but traveling to where she's actually waiting in the interim, Her waiting is of the stationary kind....his is for a passing of time..... not the same thing....

I checked out the Mavericks. First thing that struck me-sounds like Roy Orbison! In fact, I should have been true sounds amazingly like "Crying". Nice music. Your tune is also excellent! Take care. Greg
