... Aside from BIAB, of course!!!

I was laid off in March of this year from a company I spent 22 years with. Times were getting tough and I had to dip into my 401K savings already, even though the severance package was not bad. At 58, it's tough to find another job.

Applied for a similar job with a large company, had the usual HR Recruiter interview via phone. Then I went to meet the hiring manager. Interview was supposed to be 45 minutes. BUT, it was not an interview at all. More like an experience exchange and it lasted about two hours. The manager flat out told me that I was her top candidate.

Few days later, I get a phone call from HR, telling me that there is a "strong interest" in me. Shortly after that, the background check was initiated and is now completed.

I should have an offer letter this coming Monday or Tuesday and will start after the New Years weekend.

Is THAT a Christmas present, or what? I am flat out elated, crying and laughing at the same time!!! LOL!

Merry Christmas!!! smile

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, Bob and Charlie! My emotions are flying high right now!!! And, Bob, yes - it is like winning the lottery! smile

No worries, Charlie... will have to put in some long hours until I get their process more efficient, so they don't have to work weekends and late nights anymore. BIAB will NOT be neglected smile

Merry Christmas! smile

Tell me about it... thought, I would retire with the previous company. Then the world came crushing down on my wife and I, because the office was relocated to Florida (which we could NOT have afforded to move to at the time).

So yeah, UP is MUCH better!!!

Life throws us a curve ball every now and then... hit and miss... then you hit one and it's all good!

Really good news Mike. Wouldn't it be funny if you enjoy working for the new employer more than you did your prior employer?

Hi Mike,

Congratulations ! I went through almost exactly the same thing about 2 years ago! So glad to hear that you landed well!

You mentioned "getting their process more efficient" so I'm guessing you are a manufacturing engineer?

In the past, losing one's job after 50 did not bode well for the likelihood of re-employment. But these days (especially in manufacturing) That isn't necessarily the case. Young people have been steered away from manufacturing careers for so long that the rising wave of baby boomer retirements has left any manufacturing company (that's still in business) scrambling to find replacements for their retirees... especially technical people.

In many places, retirees get hired right back as temps, collecting retirement benefits and wages at the same time.

Bottom line, sometimes what seems like a disaster turns out to be an opportunity! Best of luck to you and your wife!

Thanks so much, Pat.

Nope, not a manufacturing engineer. This is a job in a hosted software/application solutions environment. I'll be streamlining their Sales Reporting and Sales Compensation process, something I am very familiar with. Process improvements, for the most part. I'll be the supervisor in their Sales Operations department.

Appreciate the kind words.

Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!:)

Mike, that is even more impressive! Since you were competing against the best and brightest young talent (and in the world of software/ application solutions, I'd guess its a very large group of talented contenders) the fact that you were chosen speaks well of your resume and work references!

Thanks again, Pat. I am beyond elated with being chosen over my competition. One of which was a Lady that already worked for the company, but her job function moved and she is now being laid off. I feel for her and wish her the best of luck!

Congratulations, Mike.

I can certainly relate, as the same happened to me and I was out of work for 13 months.

It's interesting you mentioned:

Quote:
Then the world came crushing down on my wife and I, because the office was relocated to Florida

because that's what we did. My company didn't relocate, but my wife and I relocated from Northern Virginia to Pensacola Florida. We saw what could have been a very bad situation instead as an opportunity to get back to our folks (who live here in Pensacola) and be there for them for the time they have left in this world.

I am re-employed here, working in IT Project Management again, but I'm also church pianist and choir director at the church we go to (guess which job I like the most?) smile

I'm so glad you landed on your feet, because yes, it can be difficult, but often times the adage is so true that "when a door shuts, another one opens."

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Mike.

I went through a similar process about 18 months ago.
In IT we older IT okies turns out to have the overall view and process experience that trumps the specialised silo views that the young emerging IT chappies have.

I now get the offers to manage the more complex projects or provide advise on a contract basis now which suits me better to give me a little more freedom than what I had when I was fulltime employed.
