RealBand has suddenly decided to not load my files I get the following error messages.
"Error writing to wave file" "Error creating the output file" and "Disc full"
I am using RealBand 2016 on my 64bit Win 10 computer.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Have you checked how much free room you have on your drive that contains Realband?

Regards,
Noel

Next step:
Save that file somehwere else as a means of interim storage.

Try to copy that file from that interim storage to your RealBand drive. Do you get the same error?

If not, then the error is probably caused by RealBand.
If yes, then the error is possibly a matter of how the drive has been formatted.
If yes, what is the disk format: FAT or NTFS?

Also, have you checked the drive for errors?

Does your computer have more than one hard drive? If so, are you running RealBand on the secondary drive? RealBand ALWAYS saves backups to the primary (C) drive. If you do a lot of saves then you may have filled the primary drive with backups.

" RealBand ALWAYS saves backups to the primary (C) drive. "

I don't think this is true. It think it saves backups to the drive it is saving to.
I wish this was an assignable location.
I have RB backups on the NAS at work from running RB there off the external drive and saving the files to it.
(bottom image)
I'm expecting phone calls because of it. There are strict rules on this drive as it is replicated instantly to multiple locations, and I forgot RB was going to do that!
It was work related though, I was asked to record the narrations for a school offering online classes for the film industry.
I love my job.

Dave, 34 GB may seem like a lot (especially to me, who started in the 70s with hard drives that were large at 10,000 bytes), but it's not. Hard drives running Windows need room to swap data, and it should be at least 15% of the drive that is free. If you have a 256GB boot drive, maybe, but if your 34 GB is on a 1TB drive, no way. So, what is the total capacity of your drive, and what can you remove?

My original statement is likely incorrect. A better statement is RealBand automatically selects the backup storage location; users can not choose where backups are stored.

In my case I run RealBand on a two volume system with "C" as the primary hard drive and "E" as the secondary hard drive. RealBand and all its accessory files are loaded on the secondary hard drive but RealBand stores backups on the primary. There is no way for a user to change this setting.

When I asked about why RealBand is storing backups on "C" while the program, accessory files and all user settings point to "E". The answer I received from support is the backup location is set based on the primary hard drive setting of the operating sytem.

My guess was PG Music made the decision on multiple volume drive systems to locate active and backup folders on different volumes to increase safety. But that is just a guess.

Where do you save your SEQ files? On C: or E:?

I can reproduce this easily;
Open a SEQ file, save it using Save As and put it on a unique drive (I used my Temp Audio Directory drive which I NEVER save SEQ files to and had no RBBackup folder before doing)
Then I made a slight change and hit Save .. this drive now had a RBBackup folder and a backup file in it.
Again, it did not have any backups or RBBackup folder before doing this.

I'm pretty sure it backs up to the drive it saved to, and to me this seems like it could be much improved.
1. Having a backup on another drive is safer
2. Keeping track of where the backups are can be problematic .. I probably have backups on drives I wouldn't think to search if needed.
C. Having them all in one place on a given machine would save time.

The default behavior is fine for most users, so I understand the default location decision. I just wish I could override it.
In Other Words I wish this location was assignable for each installation.

Morning everyone, thank you for your replys. When I turned my computer on this morning it automatically did a disc check and a repair before starting. Once started I have been able to load files into RealBand. However, it is still a bit disconcerting because I still don't know the cause.
Later today I will carry out a few checks based on your comments and see were I go from there.
Many thanks.
Dave

That's the symptom of a HD that have developed/is developing Bad Sectors/data corruption. Time to change the HD.

Get a 512GB SSD and you won't believe how faster everything works.

You can thank me later! wink

I've solved part of the problem. My files are saved onto my F drive and the programs on C, however, I didn't realize that an automatic backup was also saved on C. As regards the other part of the problem I'm not sure what I did wrong to cause the wave file to take up so much space. All seems fine for now but I'll keep an eye on it to see if it happens again.
Many thanks
Dave

You probably didn't do anything wrong.
When drives start exhibiting weirdness like this, I agree with LtKojak; time to replace it.
If it goes it can take hours and hours of work with it.

Where I work has a web division (my department) and an IT division. I see this regularly; people bring in a computer where the drive died. It is very expensive to try to recover this data. It may be salvageable, maybe not, but you have to pay either way. A new drive is MUCH cheaper and will likely improve performance, have more room, etc.

I'm taking yours and LtKojaks advise and have ordered a Toshiba 512Gb SATA SSD. I already have EaseUS Todo Backup to transfer the drive.
Many thanks for your advise.

There's a very good utility by the name of WinDirStat. It will analyze your disk, and show you exactly how much space is taken by each file, in a graphical format. Selecting each region on the graphic shows you which file(s) and the sizes being consumed.

It can be downloaded from this link

You might more scientifically study just what is actually on that disk.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
