There used to be a place where you could dl a ton of BIAB files from different forum members, I think it was Alana's (?) and I also have some from another forum member who posted a link to their BIAB files for anyone who wanted them. I don't recall anyone getting sued or getting kicked off the board. I thought it was great folks were willing to share and it saved me a lot of time when I first got BIAB.

I thought it was great folks were willing to share and it saved me a lot of time when I first got BIAB. one such place is the Yahoo Groups BIAB forum, which has several download directories of user-created BIAB covers. Been there for years. However, a few years ago they were apparently contacted by a lawyer, and afterwards all of the melodies and lyrics were removed from the songs. They are still archived by the original song titles.

"I'd love to be able to share (as in give away) my BIAB cover tunes with others who might find them useful." One cannot "share" what one does not own.

The best bet is advice from a legal professional versed in copyright law. It's no guarantee that you won't get sued, but if you do, it will show you thought you were doing the right thing and that should limit your liability.

Insights and incites by Notes Intent doesn't matter except in Supreme Court arguments. Try telling the traffic cop that you really didn't intend to be going 80mph in a 55mph speed zone and see where that gets you. The BEST bet for this situation is to PURCHASE the license to do what he wants to do. And if he can't afford to do that, he doesn't need to do it. I'll wager that the proper license is much much cheaper than a lawyers consultation fee when he would need to respond to a lawsuit. Copyright lawsuits are very expensive propositions. In court cases, if you have consulted a lawyer, and simply got bad advice from the lawyer, often you will simply get a cease and desist order with no damages. Judges are human and recognize that you tried to do the right thing. It's not the same as a traffic ticket. You don't need a lawyer to interpret a speed limit sign. On the other hand, the license might be cheaper. But it may not. At one time, I wanted to sell MIDI sequences. I contacted the Harry Fox Agency. They were the backing tracks I use for my duo, without melody, but with all the song specific parts (bass line, drums, comp parts, and even background vocals done on synth patches). The price was up to $2.50 per song with if I remember correctly, a 500 song minimum payment up front. I decided not to sell backing track sequences. But that was probably close to 20 years ago, when MIDI was still new. Things might be better now. It's worth it to check. Insights and incites by Notes

In court cases, if you have consulted a lawyer, and simply got bad advice from the lawyer, often you will simply get a cease and desist order with no damages. Judges are human and recognize that you tried to do the right thing. My faith in humanity lies here. If I am ever being 'judged', I hope the Judge(s) have the same view. In my past I feel fortunate our system accounted for this at the Grand Jury level. That is where my peers were truly present. /just my personal experience

Example of a human judge.
I used to have a little Fiat Spyder sports car, it went 135mph before the tach hit the yellow line.
One day I was driving up I95, at the speed limit, between two overpasses was a straightaway with no traffic, so I hit the gas pedal, took it up to about 120 and back down again.
I passed the next overpass going the speed limit and saw a half dozen highway patrol cars and a couple of officers were pointing at me, I pulled over before they turned the lights on.
When I got to court I relayed what happened, told them what the very polite officer said, "The FHP person in the plane said it looked like you kicked the afterburners in" (or something really close - this was about 20 years ago).
I was measured at going 95mph between the stripes on the road on I-95.
I explained that I did it safely without endangering anyone's life as there were no other cars nearby, and that when you have a sports car that reads 140mph on the speedometer, most people, including myself are curious as to what it will do. And I told him I was guilty.
He fined me $35.00 for court costs.

I suppose if I had proof that I got legal consul from a legal professional, the judge would consider the fact that I thought I was obeying the law into his/her deliberation.
But then, there are exceptions to every rule. Some people let their authority go to their heads, and some are just not nice people.

If you want to write down the chords and share that, you will need to get the copyright holders permission because you don't want to say "This is the chord chart to...such and such a song." and include the title.
I've seen several companies who appear to get around this by giving a set of chords and a title that gives the user a hint as to what the song is. For instance, I might do a chord chart for "Winter Wonderland" and call it "Wandering Around in Winterland". Yamaha does this with the song lists on their keyboards and sometimes I have to really scratch my head to figure out what the real song name is.
