I'm looking for better guitar sounds and not really impressed with Coyote. Does anyone have any suggestions on a free vst wave table?

This topic has taken on life in the forums about what to use instead of soundfonts or Coyote.

Here are some free, acoustic guitar-specific plugins you can try instead of Coyote:
http://www.spicyguitar.com/
http://www.dskmusic.com/dsk-guitars-acoustic/

There's another one by Ample Sound, but it looks like it's a trial and not a free version, but it sounds amazing.

For guitar sounds that don't sound fake....

Realstrat is one.... but you have to know how to play a keyboard and operate the various controllers in it. I think they also make a real acoustic as well check it out here: http://www.musiclab.com/products/realstrat/info.html check out the video demo

More realistic with less work is Band in a Box real tracks.....

totally real is actually playing a guitar and miking it.

For anyone reading, I want to make sure there is no confusion between the two versions of Coyote.

Coyote Wavetable uses the Microsoft sounds and consequently isn't very good. It was provided so users of 64-bit Windows would be able to hear sound.

Coyote Forte is very different, and for about $50 has very nice sounds.

Free is usually worth every penny you pay for it.

I'm curious to know why you wouldn't use real tracks for all your guitar parts?

"I'm curious to know why you wouldn't use real tracks for all your guitar parts?"

For me, it would be accurate solo's and riffs I can't play myself or take time to learn before completing my song.

Midi is great, and more so for good keyboard players. I'm not that either. But, there are many really good and accurate free midi files available.

However, free fell through when I opted for a Roland Integra 7 to play my sounds. There are more than 2500 midi only styles in Biab that I have not been using.

You may want to look at Applied Acoustic's GS-2 Guitar Strum. It uses modeling algorithms to create both acoustic and electric guitar sounds. It includes many built-in midi riff and strum patterns. The player is designed for midi keyboard input. You can find out more about it:

That one has some good sounds, but even in the demonstration videos some sequences still sound like a piano being a guitar imposter. I've listened to it without seeing the video. Single notes sound often like a guitar. Many chords and fast runs had me have the impression that the piano is in the foreground. Maybe it is just the attack of the strings that sounds different played with a pick and hammer ons and pull offs. Maybe it is the density of the chords that are unfamiliar for my guitar ear, like on a guitar the notes in a chord most often span more than an octave, on a piano that is rare compared to the guitar.

But: It is still the best that I have heard. It's a pity that it requires a keyboard for (realistic) input.

Grinch,

The gentleman playing the keyboard is one of the founders of AAS. I do not know much about him, his background or role within the company beyond video demonstrator.

What I have figured out is he is more intent on demonstrating his keyboard skills than he is with demonstrating the capability of the software. When guitar riffs or strum patterns are played the software can sound fairly realistic. As with anything a lot depends on how it is used.

I've always considered the guitar patterns in the BiaB midi styles to be very effective. I think AAS Strum GS-2 would work well with the BiaB midi guitar patterns. Also, Strum GS-2 ships with more than 700 midi guitar patterns.

I have Strummer (2 and 3 I think) from many years back. It runs as a third party in Kontakt. It also had some dulcimer samples in it which I used on some christmas music. I searched briefly for the program and since it runs in Kontakt, I had to open that but don't have the time to search in depth for it.

I was also going to post an example of the sound you get from it but I think the original straight synth version is gone. I found the song and it obviously has live guitar in it where I recorded over the synth parts at some point. It's not on my website so don't bother to search there. I'll look later if I get a chance, for the cakewalk project.

It sounds fairly good but anybody who knows what a guitar sounds like can pick it out as a synth immediately. It fools no one except those uneducated to the sound of a real guitar.

That said, this synth does perform a job and has a purpose. For those who are fairly proficient keyboard players already and are willing to take the time to learn the nuances of this synth, they are able to create almost real sounding guitar parts and solos.

In another forum, I know one such musician. I really had to listen hard to one of the songs he posted a few years back to determine if he got someone to play the electric guitar solo or if it was a guitar synth. Do to subtle nuances in the sound, it was, no doubt, a synth. A few of the bends were beyond the capabilities of a guitar. Coupled with the fact that he is a very proficient keyboardist and doesn't, to my understanding, play 6 string, and the synth artifacts....it was a synth, played on the keys.
