Wikifonia has been a source for mxl files. Wikifonia in this sense doesn't exist anymore because of copyright reasons. There are still a few sites where somebody offers the zip archive for download. Use your favorite search engine and search for Wikifonia. http://www.musicxml.com/ is another source of links to sites with MusicXML files.

Mxl files are xml files in a compressed format. Xml also is an abbreviated form of xtml which does not have anything to do with music. If you don't know what it is look it up on the internet.

MuseScore is a free open source notation program that is capable of reading and writing several formats of notation files.

Just for this post I opened an mxl file in MuseScore and exported it to xml format. This file I did open in BIAB and put the melody into the melody track. Instantly BIAB created an accompaniment based on the chords of the xml file.

Previous settings in my preferences probably made sure that the result is somewhat realistic. Also it was kind of a "narrow gauge" test.

If the MusicXML file has more than two tracks that you want to open you should open the file in RealBand. Make sure you select all the tracks you want in the window that opens.

Be aware that downloading copyrighted sheet music in any form could be seen as a breach of copyright laws.
