Hi everyone, Here's an old song Marg and I recorded with Band in a Box and Realtracks. I played lead guitar and pedal steel; the rest is all Biab. I like to render the backing tracks as wave files and then import them into my Boss BR1600 for mixing and processing; and recording and mastering; then back to the computer for normalizing and CD writing. Now and Then (There's a fool such as I) would appreciate some opinions.

Good to hear the old ones. Beautiful vox. I like the mix except, I do think your steel could come up just a tad, IMHO.

Only suggestion is to bring the steel up in the mix. The rest sounds very nice. Excellent vocal! Thanks for sharing your music! God bless! My music at Myspace

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Thanks everyone for your opinions, I just increased the volume on the Pedal Steel, and it should still be available at the same link. Now And Then (There's A Fool Such As I ) I'm just beginning to learn to play the Pedal Steel; so it was an experiment adding it to the song, but I guess I should be more confident. Marg and I have been recording a number of songs lately. We'll post more. Andrew Lloyd and Marg Fisher

Andrew,
Very nice - very nice.
I do have some suggestions which you can toss if you like:
1. I would intro the song slightly differently from a volume/buildup standpoint. It's 'on' on the first beat. Consider perhaps just the steel string acoustic guitar for the first 3.5 measures then bring in the drums on a fill to lead into the verse.
2. On Marg's vocal, you might try high-pass filtering it at perhaps 150-200 hz or so, then using some compression to bring her voice up front a little more in the mix. There's some parts here and there where she has some low-frequency stuff that dominates the level. Once that's set, perhaps some very light reverb to put her in the same room as the mando and drums.
3. The rhythm mix seems biased to the right channel. I'm only hearing your pedal steel and marg's vox showing up in the left channel - and when the solo steel string comes in, it's in the left.
4. The pedal steel could certainly come up even more between phrases.
Nice showcase of RealTracks - no artificial sound there whatsoever.
-Scott

I agree a little eq, compression and verb on the vox should make it even better. Nice tune, well done.

Hi everyone, I just finished My third edit of this recording. Thanks Scott for your advice. I did everything you suggested and a bit more too. I EQ'd the Vocal, removed some of the bottom end; compressed it, noise gated it, and added more reverb, as well as editing out breath sounds. Marg is a very quiet singer, so the compressed breath sounds were getting quite loud. The Vocal stands out from the mix more now. I brought up the Pedal Steel; but its not a very inspiring track as far as fills go, so I'm keeping it still in the background. Rhythm instruments are more spaced apart. We're really happy with how it has turned out now. I'm going to work on another song now. Now And Then ( There's A Fool Such As I ) Andrew Lloyd And Marg Fisher
