I would like to do some performing on Streetjelly and need advice on how to set up my gear with the minimum of changes.

I currently have an Allen Heath 10FX USB mixer with line inputs from my keyboard, mic, a roland sound module and the laptop speaker out. Output goes to two powered speakers. Can I just connect a USB from the mixer back to the laptop and what's the best way to monitor my sound. I don't want to use a soft synth.

Thanks
Tony

Tony,

You are fully equipped. Additionally, Frankie, the site owner, is very helpful.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks Don

I want to check my sound and latency etc using the Streetjelly live test. This requires me to plug phones directly into the laptop speaker out. How do I do this when I am already using audio out for Realtracks to the mixer? There must be a simple way round this.

Only yesterday, a fabulous singer/songwriter from London did a live sound-check and we viewers talked him through the final tweaking. He was distorting on the louder vocal passages. We tamed his levels so he is ready for his next performance.

If you can get to broadcasting, your listeners (mostly fellow musicians) will be happy to tweak you.

Our own Joanne Cooper performs weekly on SJ. Hopefully, she will jump in here with advice.

Hi Tony
My experience with streetjelly and BIAB is that you need two "computers" or "devices". You need one to play the tracks and the other to broadcast from. You can just use an MP3 player or iPhone to play your tracks. Plug the MP3 player and mic and guitar into the mixer and the mixer into the computer from which you are broadcasting from.

Before going live plug your headphones into the broadcasting computer and check your sound. It is difficult because there is a delay so just do your best, testing voice first then guitar and then back track. You can't really test all three together very well.

When performing, monitor your performance via headphones plugged into the mixer or a speaker (also plugged into the mixer).

I did a write up on this on my website.

http://www.joannecooper.co.za/blog/blog/broadcasting-from-streetjelly

If you want let me know when you want to test and I will come and help you.

Tony,

Here is some advice I gave a fellow eConcert musician yesterday:

I do not use and amp, I wire right into my Alesis 4 Channel as follows:

Mic in to Mixer

Instrument in to Mixer

USB from mixer to 2nd computer which is connected to the eConcert broadcaster (in this case SJ)

You can also adjust sound volume etc. on the Jellycaster.

Mixer Out to mains or headphones (either or both) and that is it.

Best bet is as mentioned above, get someone who's ears you trust to listen to your sound check.

Let me know if I can help.

Break A Leg!

Tony,

Josie and Danny are the unofficial ambassadors of PG's BIAB and very prolific in webcasting on several sites. You've hit pay-dirt.

I'm anxious to hear your stuff. Are you a songwriter/singer? What instrument(s) do you play?

Once you appear on SJ, we can mark you as "Favorite" and then we'll be emailed a notification whenever you schedule a performance. SJ is much like PG Forums - one warm, friendly, worldwide family. Trolls don't survive long.

I have ever only used one PC to perform at streetjelly.

If I am doing a guitar/vocal only, I just use my webcam. Since the webcam mic doesn't work too well, I use my tascam usb a/d device to capture the sound (I use one condenser mic to capture it all). I think the sound is fine, but I never asked anyone how the video (latency) was. To get/keep an audience, you have to have video that looks mostly real-time.

When I did a few shows with BIAB, I recorded my backing to an MP3 player and then got a peavy usb mixer that allowed for the MP3 player and my condenser mic at the same time (my older tascam couldn't do it).

I use a mixer into a UAC-2 Zoom USB 3 audio interface. https://www.zoom.co.jp/products/audio-converter/uac-2-usb-30-audio-converter

What I like about the interface is that it is so simple to use and set up. It has a built in 'loopback' button that flicks the audio from BIAB out via the computer to the web and mixes in the feeds from the mixing desk. I'll post some photos when I get home.

You can use the jukebox to play live from BIAB or just use rendered wav files in a playlist if you want to automate the playback. I'm trying to make everything as hands off as possible when I play.

My biggest problem is internet connection speed in my village. Make sure you have a decent internet connection. Having said that, I'm now investigating simultaneous broadcasts to econcert etc. You'll find me on streetjelly as Lambada:-)

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Having played around with Streetjelly I have decided to connect my mixer to a second computer to do a test before going live. I need to get hold of some extra cables.
I have an extra complication right now because we are snowbirds living in a 5th wheel for the winter so space is at a premium. This is my winter project.

I play covers on my keyboard purely for my own amusement and don't sing. There don't seem to be many keyboardists on Streetjelly and the range of talent is amazing.

What's a 5th Wheel? Is that like a mobile home? I'm not from America (lol).

Yes sir. A lot of folks like to take them south for the winter to avoid the cold.

My father goes down to Florida in his.

I'm thinking of getting a mobile home when I finally return to Australia. I like the idea of moving around. There used to be loads of great campsites on the coast. Not so many now, but still possible.

A 5th Wheel is a trailer with a hitch mounted in the bed of a pickup truck (Ute) rather than the rear bumper and the front hitch area "goose-necks" up and over the tailgate to mate with a hitch plate much similar to that of a typical tractor-trailer combination.
