It appears to be a European version of a hammer dulcimer.

Excellent clip Don!

The instrument seems to have the same number of strings per note as a piano. The sound also sounds related.

The guys is certainly very skillful.

Yes, it's a Hammered Dulcimer. However, I've never seen one played with such frenzy before

The instrument is a "Hackbrett" on four legs just like many modern lap steel guitars are played standing.

The name of the instrument that often is played in eastern Europe and in Gypsy music is "Cymbal" -- but if you try to find it on the Internet "Zimbal", "Zymbal" or "Cimbal" are better spellings. You will see that.

The basic form is a "Hackbrett" (chopping board) in German and in English is known as a hammered dulcimer. Over here it is a typical Alpine region msuic instrument that comes in many forms, builds, and tunings.

Not intending to hijack, but seeing we are talking about popularity of unusual instruments in different locations, we came across this Organ Grinder in Stuttgart. More popular there than here. He was quite entertaining (for realism, image him endlessly playing the song "La Paloma Blanca"...)

He had treats on top and handed one out to everyone who gave him a tip.

He was busy, but his right arm must have ached.

Now, I digress too long, back to the "Hackbrett" - Thanks GHinCH for the clarifications

It would appear there is a error in translation - I don't hear no Autumn Leaves in there.

Dan,

It's a highly "Jazzed up" version. You must listen very closely to extract "Autumn Leave" but it's there, trust me! lol

The bridge stands out a little better, then he goes into flight of fancy so common to you Jazz-types. Chortle.

WOW that was a great find Don.

GHinch, thanx for the explanation. The hammered dulcimer also comes in many forms, builds and tunings on this side of the big pond.

Dan, I did hear snippets of Autumn Leaves in this.

I haven't lost all of my marbles but there is a small hole in the bag someplace!

Mario,

I kept in expectation of a timpanist crescendo.

So, does this mean I've graduated Jazz 101?

OK, I believe you and Mario on this. A little scary for me since I know the tune very well having played it for years. But my ears seem to be failing me more and more these days.

Dan, your ears are not failing you. I had a hard time picking out Autumn Leaves. I also know the song very well and this sounds nothing like the original. Like I said just short sections sounded like it, very short sections.

Oh boy, I sure can relate to hearing loss. I worked many years in high ambient noise industries and lost most of my high end. Now I'm finding that I'm losing my mids also. I heavily EQ my listening these days.

Try listening while "thinking" Autumn Leaves, that may help. Granted, the musician goes on a tangent and orphans the melody.

I think Jazzers have a special endorsement on their Poetic License that allows them to go "off road" and "cross country". (ducking)

Just today someone commented: "Aw, Autumn Leaves!" So, I'm not The Lone Ranger.

I agree though, it's well buried.

Just listen to the words of Autumn Leaves "The falling leaves drift by the window" at the very first measures. Just as the video starts, he plays the melody to these words.

We did a song which had a brief refrain by the horns of three blind mice. But that don't mean we were playing Three Blind Mice. I have not listened a second time, but I had no idea what that guy was playing on my first listen.

Except for a couple of suspect chords near the end, I'm sure that many of us could hear the tune all the way through. Ray

I certainly had no trouble following the melody through. For the most part it was a lovely bit of improv. Just a couple of suspect chords as Ray mentioned, but we've all (the jazz musos amongst us) done that...
