In an effort to learn more technique in BIB and just to have a little fun, I've started a BIB version of Hotel California. It would be fun if others did the same. I'm using the chords from this site, but transposing them to Am for my voice.

I also did 'Hotel California' to learn BIB techniques sometime back. Using a combination of RealTracks, MIDI and MP3, I created a very realistic, nearly note perfect version of this song.

I don't perform and had no plans to post it anywhere, I discarded the tracks and sgu/seq files after about two weeks work.

The key to the realism was the mp3 audio I cut/spliced into my tracks. They can help you too.

From YouTube, I downloaded this "Hotel California" guitar lesson given by Don Felder himself. It's even played for your convenience in the Key of Am!!

RealTracks, MIDI bass and lead guitar by Don Felder.

Here is the YouTube link. Hotel California signature licks and lead by Don Felder in Am

No intro. 48 bar chorus, from bar 1 to bar 48. Repeat x1 chorus
No Melody
No Soloist track.
Song is saved with Volume, Pan, Reverb, Chorus, Bank0,
Style is _ACPOP16.STY (16ths Accordion Folk-Pop [85 RS])

RealTracks in style: 1759:Bass, Electric, Pop16ths Ev 085
RealTracks in song: ~689:Organ, B3, Background Pop Ev 085

RealTracks in style: 1765:Guitar, High-Strung Acoustic, Fingerpicking Pop16ths Ev16 085
MIDI Drums :1 Standard Drum Kit (1)

I searched my hard drive and found the initial RB backup seq file. I rendered and uploaded to Soundcloud a thirty second clip of where how things sounded at the start of the project. At this point, no editing had been started other than to sync the mp3 audio to the existing BIB generated tracks. Several tracks were eventually replaced with midi tracks and several realtracks were replaced with other instruments. This is just a demonstration of what I started with.

Demonstration audio of Hotel California

How did you get such a dead-on version of the opening guitar figure?

This is a version I did as an instrumental featuring a solo lead guitar. This was done with all real tracks from BIAB. No personal playing or MP3 merges. It took several rendered tracks and some creative editing to get a reasonable melody that captures the feel of the classic but adds its own flavors as well.

"The key to the realism was the mp3 audio I cut/spliced into my tracks."

It is the MP3 audio from the Don Felder YouTube lesson.

I downloaded the YouTube audio. It is an isolated track of just the lead guitar work. Once saved as a stem, it is no different than if I'd played the part live, use a realtrack or hire a musician to do it.

Since in every aspect, it is a live performance track, I created a tempo map of the track using the Audio Chord Wizard and generated the Real Tracks to that tempo map. Once I synced the Don Felder audio track to Real Band, then the process to create a realistic performance started on a per track basis.

That's pretty impressive Jeff. It certainly keeps the overall vibe of the original.

I'm thinking of staging a contest (with a prize) for the best BIB/RB version of Hotel California. What say you?

Looking beyond Bob's brilliant and correct musings? I'd follow the contest but not enter.

Forgetting Copyright for a moment, with all of the variety capability of BIAB, it seems impossible to choose a 'best' BIAB production.

Would it be a smooth 90db cover?

An Atmospheric wind instrument render from MarioD?

A video from RnAM?

A brass arrangement from Matt Finley?

A MIDI style performance from Notes Norton?

A 'radio ready' render from Tom, Bud and Janice?

A new lyrics version from Floyd Jane?

A Jazz cover from Dani Lindross and Alek Rand?

An instrumental from Sergio?

Americana/acoustic from RSDean?

Or a hundred more varied and unique versions - and then we are back to --- COPYRIGHT ---

copyright should not be an issue, no one is trying to make money off the song.
The winning song would not be a note for note copy of the record, no more than a live Eagles performance matches the recording. It would stretch the ingenuity of BIB/RB enthusiasts, what drums to use, where is that reggae rhythm guitar, how many time do I go through RB multi-riffs to build the guitar duel at the end?
You don't really see a copyright issue, do you?

Yes. It is unquestionably a copyright infringement. No need to include Don Henley's law firm for an opinion.

But if I just continue a thread asking for help in perfecting a BIB version of the song, that's not an infringement?
Okay, I will post ongoing versions of my effort in this thread and ask for suggestions. I suppose it it were a contest, no one would help each other.

Does anyone know a way (outside of using a period after the chord) to make the rest at the end of each measure of the beginning?

You can learn it, practice it, discuss it, play it privately and for personal consumption. It can't be used in any manner in a public or commercially viable circumstance without permission and/or payment. There is value to winning a contest - we can't do that.

I don't think discussing the construction of the song and certainly any BIAB/RB techniques infringe on anything that would be copyrightable.

Fair Use doctrine allows educational study of copyrighted works.

My version is coming along, and I laid in a vocal yesterday, so I'll continue this project in Users Showcase. I did an abbreviated version of the guitar duel on RB, using a Texas solo to stand in for Joe Walsh. No way I can duplicate the recording, and I won't be using MP3, but if I can approach the feel of the song I'll be happy. I won't add any instruments, but will add percussion.

One way to overcome the copyright issue is to get Don Felder, Don Henley, and the heirs of Glenn Frey to endorse the competition.

After all, they are the ones to profit (never to forget the respective publisher(s) who also profit.)

They'd profit from the competition and from a possible resulting CD playing a selection of the best performances.

PGMusic would profit from having their name used on the CD.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
