When I Grow Up

https://soundcloud.com/peterf1957/when-i-grow-up

Now for something a bit different a whimsical number for those baby boomers among us who haven't quite decided what to do when they grow up.

Leon - Lyrics & Vocal
Me - Backing vocal and very brief ukulele outro.

RealTracks in song: 2126:Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Half,Half Sw 110

When I grow up
Could have been a painter
Didn’t want it bad enough
Could have been an actor
If my face wasn’t quite so rough
Could have been a surgeon
Can’t stand the sight of blood
Perhaps a taxidermist
No, I don’t believe I would

I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up
I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up

Could have been a writer
But I couldn’t find the words
Or an ornithologist
If it wasn’t for the birds
Could have been a fighter
But I wouldn’t hurt a fly
Could have been a pilot
But I don’t like to get too high

I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up
I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up

Could have been a mountain climber
But I’ve got no head for heights
Could have been a dancer
Don’t look so good in tights
Could have been a baker
And designed a brand new biscuit
Could have been a gambler
But I didn’t want to risk it

I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up
I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up

Yes, I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up
I’m still trying to decide
What I’ll be when I grow up

Just outstanding! Love the lyrics. The mix is spot on. Great arrangement, and the vocals sound really nice!

Very well done!

What a cool idea, a clever write and fun song arrangement! Vocal and mix sound great.

I enjoyed this very much - still smiling. (And still deciding...LOL!)

Peter a very cool song. I'm still trying to grow up but I don't think that I will ever reach that point. Great idea, lyrics, vocals, mix and overall production. I enjoyed listening.

Peter (and Leon),

Clever! Leon's vocal on this is nice - mixed well. (It kept reminding me of a Bob Dylan song, but I could never put my finger on it...)

The choice of instruments on this is brilliant! Great (unusual) combination. You could make a whole career on that sound (the way Leon Redbone did with his sound). I liked that outro...

Good mix! A great listen.

Hi Peter,

I enjoyed the clever lyrics a lot. Great vocals by
Leon. A very interesting arrangement.
Unfortunately your ukulele is out of tune.
Enjoyed listening though.

Hmmmm...I was born in the first week of the first month of the
first year of the baby boom (1946) and I'm still not sure. My younger
better half Janice says "don't grow up -- it's a trap!"

This write is jam packed with clever lines and great rhymes and
the vocals are perfect for the feel. And, the arrangement and
mix is in the pocket. Sounds really great on our KRK's.

Fun!!!

You are too kind.
I remember some years ago Leon (unrelated to Mr Redbone) telling me to listen to Leon Redbone.
As far as the instrument choices I built the song around the ukulele but really liked the reggae organ when it was added.
