be aware often such files have embedded commands.
this is why settings jump to whatever the author set when created.
so best bet is to view them in an event editor to see what embedded
commands were put in a midi file by the author.
ideally you need to strip out commands and put in your own.

if your new to midi its a good idea to get a good book on midi explaining
every aspect of midi.
