I was able to add an effect to a section of an audio track, but how do you edit / delete that effect?

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the forum! The quickest and easiest way is to "undo" which can be selected from the edit part of the menu bar or press CNTRL + Z keys at the same time.

You probably can't undo an edit once the file has been saved.

If you added an effect, that effect should be listed in the Fx windows, but you need to tell us more: How did you add the effect? What is the effect? As much info as possible helps give accurate responses.

If you added effects using the PGMusic built-in audio effects (which brings up a list for Compressor, Gate, Distortion, Reverb, Echo, Chorus, ..., Hum Filter) versus using a DXi or VSTi effect, then those are what are called destructive effects. The best you can hope for is to "undo" the effect immediately after applying it. Otherwise, you have permanently changed the audio and hope you have a backup of the original file. Using DXi or VSTi effects however, just requires you to remove or change the effect.

If the effect is still being provided by a plugin you can remove the plug in as indicated above.

If you have "burned" it to the audio track you can not remove it. You would have to render the audio track again with the plug disabled. In RB that is not a major problem.

That is also a primary reason why you NEVER burn the effect to the audio track but always let it remain as a plugin.

Even when I use destructive effects, I always first duplicate the track, then mute the original track before applying the effect (well, other than maybe gain change). That way, I can always get back to the original audio. Uses a little disk space, but well worth the insurance.

The only effect I apply destructively is Melodyne and pitch tuning.

Everything else remains always and forever a plug in in the track or Buss. That way, I can always edit that effect.

I added the effect by selecting a section of a track and then edit-> audio effects -> echo

Does this add the effect permanently (after undo is no longer available)?

Jeff, yes, that is correct. The items under "Edit, Audio Effects" are permanent destructive effects. They have their place, but they were around long before we even had access to DX and VST effects. You should be able to find replacement VSTs (even free ones) probably for all of the effects in the menu.

For all practical purposes yes... it's permanent. However, up until the point you click SAVE....or close the project.... depending on where this is occurring.... most edits are reversible with the UNDO command in the EDIT drop down.

If you work in a DAW... all of this destructive editing is totally avoidable. Just use a plug in FX and you can easily bypass it, save it as a preset, remove it.... whatever, all with out printing it to the track. ALL my songs are done this way. You hear reverb on my track? That reverb is a plug that is in the track or the buss and is not printed until I do an export but even then, the only printing is to the exported wave. The original file and it's tracks are still clean and dry with the plug in the buss or FX bin.

Use File - Open Special (or Open Backup in older versions)

Look in your RBBackup folder for the backup RB saved for you. Open it, export the desired track separately, then Import the resulting wave file into the newer project.

RB backs up your SEQ file when you save and keeps a few recent copies stashed away safe.
Realband Backup files have a .BKS file extension, so they may be associated with another program (or icon) but RB will have a few backups stashed away for you. On whatever drive the project is on.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
