For all practical purposes yes... it's permanent. However, up until the point you click SAVE....or close the project.... depending on where this is occurring.... most edits are reversible with the UNDO command in the EDIT drop down.

If you work in a DAW... all of this destructive editing is totally avoidable. Just use a plug in FX and you can easily bypass it, save it as a preset, remove it.... whatever, all with out printing it to the track. ALL my songs are done this way. You hear reverb on my track? That reverb is a plug that is in the track or the buss and is not printed until I do an export but even then, the only printing is to the exported wave. The original file and it's tracks are still clean and dry with the plug in the buss or FX bin.
