Hi, I'm a newby with not much music theory (a chord strummer) using 2015 version. I have found a midi file on the net of a song I would like to play along with. The person who created the file has slowed down the ending (a lot)and I don't like it that way. I think they just slowed down while recording because I don't see any changes in the tempo. To try and reduce the amount of slowing I have increased the tempo bit by bit for the last few bars. It still slows down but not so much as before. As a BB file and a Midi it plays fine but when I save it as a mp3 and put it into my mp3 player the tempo seems to revert back to the super slow version. Can someone please guide me. First, welcome to the forum.
A midi file is a small file that is instructions that a midi player understands and performs the instructions from the midi file. A midi file makes no sound of its own. When you render the midi file to the MP3, it renders using the midi instructions and not the BIAB changes you made.
The tempo is embedded with cc commands that actually control the tempo with midi instructions. You will need to open the midi file in a sequencer and address your tempo changes there.

In the days I worked in MIDI, I too would physically play slower at the end rather than edit the temp settings in the measures. It was just so much easier and required no editing.
MIDI didn't care. All it was doing was recording the placement of the notes in it's internal tempo grid. Since I played the midi parts live, and also added other audio parts, it didn't matter.
Trying to reverse engineer the tempo on something like that is really, really tricky. Especially if you are trying to compensate by editing the tempo settings. Not impossible but certainly not a fun job even for someone who knows how to edit midi and does it a lot.
If you can look at the midi part in a staff view format, you can easily determine if what I described was the way they recorded it. If it was, the next issue is, can you edit in midi? If so, and the underlying midi tempo is constant....If I understood correctly, you did say the song tempo remained constant throughout..... you can slide (edit) the notes around and change their duration's for those last few measures. Not hard if you know what you're doing.
This is relatively easy to do in a DAW.

You mentioned that the tempo view shows no changes. That means whomever played the song played it slower, as Herb has already stated. This means that you will have to manually adjust all of the slower, well actually longer, notes to the correct time and length. I work in MIDI a lot and I will tell you that this is very time consuming and a big PITA as you must do this for every note on every track. My advise is to either make audio file of the song, bring it into the free Audacity and increase the tempo in that slower section of the song or better yet get another MIDI version of the song.

I will just add that, if you are trying to get BIAB to match the tempo of the existing file, it can be difficult. BIAB can adjust the tempo but only measure by measure, not a gradual tempo change.
It can often be very time consuming to fix things after the fact, when it would be easier to go back and redo the original if that is possible.

Thanks so much for the advice. It pretty much looks like I will be living with it just as it is. Last night I loaded the midi into this old old version of cakewalk (around win3.1 old. I can see no tempo changes but can see the player did slow down. I tried deleting all the sys entries, no change. I then found the bar where the slowing started and from that bar to the end I deleted all the data. Then I copied the last line of the last chorus which was at the normal tempo and pasted it onto the area I had deleted. Still no change. Guess it's learn to change it or learn to live with it. Thanks again, take care. Bryan. Midi is 100% editable. You just need to learn enough about it to be able to figure out what they did at that specific part of the song and undo it. You could also open a new midi project track in a new project. Go back to th old one and copy from the start until where the change begins. paste that into the new project. close the old one... now finish your editing. it's worth a try. That way you don't have any embedded stuff messing you up. Be sure to look carefully at the options in the "COPY" box. be sure you are only copying the actual notes. Uncheck all the other boxes.

Thanks again Guys for the help. I really appreciate the offer to have a look at it. I don't want to put you too much trouble it is after all just for me to strum and sing along with. Now that I'm 64 I have given up on my Nashville dreams, besides the grandkids tend to disappear when the old man starts jamming.
