I am attempting to enter the Steely Dan classic Josie into BIAB. It's sounding great so far but I would like to make the first 8 bars simple quarter note HiHats which I play along to on guitar (the classic intro). I am using .d to make BIAB only play drums on those bars but is there any way to force it to play quarter note HiHat rather than the complex rhythm that is being generated?
If there is no way in BIAB then I will transfer what I have to Sonar and insert the intro bars there but I just wondered whether this is possible in BIAB or even RB first.

I just finished creating Josie in Real Band a few weeks ago from a midi file I found on the web. When you're trying to create song specific parts RB is usually better for this than Biab is. In RB all you have to do is use a blank track, load up a drum kit and using editable notation enter the hi hat hits with your mouse. You can use the Piano Roll for this as well. The other way is do a YT search and find a good backing or karaoke track like this one. Now, this is the Biab forum and for me anyway, this is a hobby and I enjoy putting tunes together myself but sometimes for a complex song like Josie it's easier to just to find some tracks on the web. It took me maybe 3 minutes of auditioning a few YT vids until I found this one. I used Sampletank for the instruments including the midi drums. If I wanted to make a real production out of it I could but I don't really care. It was just something to do. The reason I love it when I can find a good midi file is because of the notation. RB gives you exactly what the different instruments are playing as notation. No busting your ears trying to figure out these chord voicings. When you compare this midi file to the original recording whoever put this together really nailed it. Bob

Hi Jazzmammal and thanks for your helpful and in-depth reply,
Funnily enough I also often use MIDI files with Sampletank 3 instruments (but in Sonar) as a starting point for backing tracks. However, I couldn't find a convincing MIDI file this time so I just thought I would try something different and see just how close I could get in BIAB. I used guitar chords I found on the web from various sources, substituting ones that didn't sound right for others that did. The main difficulty was finding a BIAB style that worked - after auditioning quite a few I am currently using _SJAZZP1.STY (Smooth Jazz Poppy Rhythm) with tempo set to 105bpm. Not exactly the right feel but good enough and the Electric Piano chords sound very close. Thanks for the RB suggestion for adding the simple HiHat intro.
The SunFly Karaoke and Backing track minus guitar links are very useful thanks and I hadn't seen them before. Your efforts with the MIDI file are great by the way. I think the last time I looked on YT for relevant information I ended up watching hours of Donald Fagen interviews instead explaining how they made various Steely Dan tracks. Fascinating stuff and fills you with admiration for their talent.
I also want to see how well either a backing track or MIDI chord data works to help generate 4 part vocal harmonies with my TC Helicon Voicelive 3. I am curious to find out whether it would be authentic sounding enough to play this live as a one man band (I already do this with simpler songs).
