That feature stopped working for me years ago. It won't work if using ASIO audio drivers. Doesn't matter what soft synth I use. My 2 workarounds are don't use it or switch audio drivers when I want it. A pain and I member more than 5 years ago this being a thread. Hasn't been fixed for me through 4 versions and I'm using 2016 now.

Well, as a bit of a "kill or cure" solution, in case there is a weird corruption anywhere, I have binned my entire BB2016 and am in the process of DLing the whole UltraPlus Pak thing from scratch.
As my DL speed is Snails Pace, and as I am working today and Sunday, it'll be Monday before I see if its worked or not.
Fingers crossed.
Ian

Ian,

Seeing that you are planning on a full re-install, here's something to try. It's the ultimate 'reset to factory settings' and is recommended by PG Music when neither of the settings under the Opt menu is successful.

1. Close BIAB.

2. Go to the \bb directory and rename the files "intrface.bbw" and "mysetup.dk" to something like "intrface.bbw.old" and "mysetup.dk.old". This makes it easier to return them to the original names if you choose to undelete them.

Note: there is no 'e' or 'a' in the middle of "intrface.bbw".

3. Now start BIAB.

The above two files are the where settings are located. Renaming them forces new files to be created and this often solves problems.

I hesitated to suggest the above because it will mean that you'll need to setup your audio/midi drivers again. Given the above image of your present setup though, that won't be difficult to do.

The above is well worth trying.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I've been assuming that you run BIAB from a fully installed version on your computer's hard drive. If you are running from a usb drive, you'll possibly need to go to the \bb directory on that drive and rename the files (depending on what installation you chose).

SOLVED - Simple really - er - when you know! Many, many thanks to Kent of PG Support for working it out. Herewith paraphrased quote from Kent so others can see and understand. -
The Chord Builder uses the MIDI Thru channel. When using an MME audio driver (looks like you are), MIDI Thru is routed to the MIDI Output Driver, which you've selected (correctly) as the Microsoft GS Wavetable. From the screenshot you posted in the forums, Band-in-a-Box itself appears to be set up correctly.

However, you're using Windows XP, correct? That version of Windows had a separate volume control for MIDI sounds, and it would get turned down to 0 automatically after playing a MIDI file in Windows Media Player (this was a constant issue when XP was still common). This would be why other users with more recent operating systems weren't able to replicate the problem.

I haven't used Windows XP in a while, but I believe if you hit the Start button, then Control panel, Sounds and Audio devices, Audio, then Volume, you'll find the mixer. Look for a slider marked "MIDI" or "SW Synth", turning it up should solve the problem.

It certainly was that although I have no idea when, if ever I touched that volume slider. It must be that WMP messing it about as per Kents answer. Ace!! One of the joys of the old XP Pro.
Thanks for all those who contributed to this thread.

Fantastic Ian
Thanks for the feedback.
Can I suggest that you might copy/paste and put a new thread in the Tips and Tricks forum. It'll help someone in future for sure.

Yes, I remember that. WMP could really throw you for a loop that way, especially since BIAB uses WMP to play audio demos.

But yes, since most folks have been on Vista, Win7, and Win10 for the past several years, we hadn't seen that crop up.

I used to see that in XP with Noteworthy Composer (NWC). I would play an audio file (maybe the song I'm working on transcribing) and all of a sudden (NWC wouldn't play anymore). Don't know why WMP did that, but once you knew that was the problem, it was easy to deal with.
