I don't get something. Does BIAB change to an actual chord, or does it manipulate the chord with pitch shifting to make the chord?

Welcome to the Forums DaClark.

If the music phrase is MIDI format, I'm pretty sure it just changes the notes that make up the chord. That's fairly straightforward and easy to do.

If the music phrase is RealTracks (Sampled Audio Phrases), it's my understanding that it uses Time Stretching and Pitch Transposition to change the Chord (song). So if, for example, you have a RealTrack with musical phrase in Eb and transpose it to Ab, Pitch Transposition is used to change the song.

Others might chip in with more accurate detail.

thanks for the welcome. ok. That makes sense. Yeah, I was asking about the real tracks. I can't tell. Can anyone with better ears notice this kind of pitch shifting? Will it sound weird to anyone like other members in a band?

DaClark,

Welcome.

My experience is that with Realtracks, it seems to be a combination of transpose and actual chord that is used in backing construction.

With transposition of audio, there is always the potential to introduce audio artifacts that corrupt the output sound. The further away from the original tonal centre that one transposes, the greater the likelihood that artifacts will happen. Transposing a semitone or tone is usually ok. By comparison, tranposing five or six semitones will probably not be so good.

When I write a song, I often try it through various keys. What I've noticed is that signature riffs that appear every two or three (re)generations in one key are not always found when the song is generated in a different key. It is this behaviour that suggests to me that transposition is used with discretion. It is also because of this behaviour that I sometimes settle on a particular key for a song... that is, I like the riffs that the chosen key generates.

Regards,
Noel

It's actually more complex than that. I read somewhere that the RT's are recorded three times with each one being a third or fourth apart. This could be different because of the instrument. Some lend themselves to pitch shifting better than others.

If it's a fourth apart like C, F and Bb and your chord is an Eb then the program could go up a minor third from the C or down one step from the F. This is where the internal magic happens.

To the question can you hear this shifting the answer is no you can't or at least most can't. I suppose if you isolate one track and give it to a young recording engineer with great ears maybe he could. This became possible just a few years ago when newer software was developed that did this much better than before.

good stuff to know. I can't seem to hear it but my ear isn't as trained as an studio guy or gals may be. It sounds complex so I'm glad I can just use it.
