Well, I can't just say NO. I'm intrigued. What do you have to connect? And how do you want the interaction to work? And what brand/make/model is your patch bay? And can you explain a little bit about the terminology used, for your specific purposes. Give us a level playing field and we can work together. Together the Team can help!

Thanks for the encouragement Video Track...and to GuitarHacker - I probably could live without a patch bay, but where's the fun in that ? ha ha.
Jeff - that's a great article, one I hadn't come across, that will probably answer most if not all of my questions. I have another excellent article, but it is written with terminology I find difficult to relate to - probably because I am connecting the studio without a lot of songwriting and recording experience (btw - I work backwards, I buy what I "think" I want on Craigslist or ebay at close to 1/2 price, and play with and use it many years later - hence I have a lot of older 'good quality' consumer equipment sitting largely unused until now...I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I am easily and fairly criticized for this stupid habit - but it's who I am ha ha)
The HIGH level goal is simple - connect anything to anything with minimal connection changes. Once I can answer your questions VideoTracker, I will no longer need the advice !!! But in short here are my more detailed requirements:
1.) I have 3 different pairs of outputs that are NEVER used at the same time (computer speakers, monitors, and a small power Amp stereo speaker setup) that I would like to switch between with minimal wire change.
2.) I have 3 effects processors (Helicon Voicworks, Boss VF1, Roland GT10, DOD G7 (for Journey song nolstalgia), each of which I envision using interchangeably for VOICE and/or GUITAR.
3.) A Presounus Firepod connected to PC, with BB and NI Softsynth
4.) Several MIDI inputs - Roland GI-20, NI Keyboard Controller, one Kore 2 controller
5.) several guitars, one bass, a few acoustic instruments - mics for all
I've read that one should not hook microphones up to a patch bay due to impedance mismatches that can damage them - so likely I'll avoid this.
As far as what to use to drive what in what combinations ? I've never focused on studio equipment use or recording - only the buying part. But I finally need to fill my bucket list of writing and recording some originals, even though it's never been my personality to focus on that over actually studying to learn to play flamenco guitar. I've lead a troubled, confusing life ha ha

I work totally in the box.... very few cords and no need to have racks.... it's all software.... .....come over to the dark side.... embrace it.

You have to get the sound into the box somehow. In one space we have a couple interfaces connected to one of these https://www.music-group.com/Categories/Behringer/Accessories/Patchbays/PX3000/p/P0268/Features#Flexible-Functionality This way we can connect various equipment to the interfaces without stressing the connections on the device itself. We damaged a line in on a 1010 interface once which was a touchy repair, so decided to leave them hooked to this patchbay and connect whatever we need that way. Generally we just use it as a through..
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Oh yeah...absolutely you have to get the sound into the box.... that does involve cables...
One midi cable, and at least one audio cable for a guitar or a mic....
But none of those are patch bay cables. Patch bays let you reconfigure your rackable gear in the studio.... ins and outs, sends and returns.... I like to let the software configure all that stuff and if I want to have the reverb ahead of the compressor I simply drag the reverb to the top of the FX bin. All patching occurs instantly and internally. No corroded connections, no noisy cables, no broken wires.
But... hey, if you like patch bays and rack gear.....and personally, I like the lights and meters on the hardware..... enjoy that way of doing things.

1010 interfaces have a digital harness that houses a bunch of connectors. These are pretty vulnerable in a real time use. Have to be careful yanking stuff in/out.
So we use the patchbay to protect it's physical connection points, as changes happen there instead; it's just a direct wired balanced connection 'front end' to the interface.
Not used for re-configuring anything here, just a central physical connection spot that is hardy, handy and handsome .. and has prevented some damage I'm sure.
We yank cables in/out from the patchbay instead of the interface itself. That's all. I know it can be used for other things but that's all we do with it.
Once it's 'in the box' we keep it there, the patchbay is only used to be a nice stable route to the interface and the box.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Ideally... one should always use care and firmly grasp the connector's body or shell and pull out after releasing any locking mechanism's.
Of course, I live in the real world where I know that doesn't always happen that way.
As an electrician, I cringe when I see people grab a cord 3 feet out and yank the plug out of the wall..... would I ever do that? I'll just leave that one right there.......
I saw a guy do that to a guitar amp guitar cord...... wanted to unplug from the amp so he just grabbed the cord and gave it a stiff quick pull.... the jack didn't pop loose like he imagined.... it was at an angle so it didn't come free..... it sure was funny though when the amp stack toppled over on the stage... "TIMBERRRRRRR" ..... I'll bet he takes the time from now on to walk to the amp and pull that cord out carefully.

I have a patch bay. currently I run most of my SOURCE stuff is in half normal position so that I can send my mic or my keyboard from the source to two separate outputs.
for example, I'll plug my mic into the preamp, then from the preamp to the rear top of patch 1.
then from the rear bottom, I run to the soundcard input.
from the top front, I run to the mixer which gives me audible realtime monitoring. (I also have my soundcard output running to the mixer so that my monitors will have the mixed sounds of the backing tracks or click track I have in my recording software as output while I'm singing into the mic).
that's my typical use for keyboards as well.
I also have some patch panels where I run them normal or thru so that I can run my mic into the preamp, then from the preamp to the rear bottom patch panel then from the front bottom, I'll just put a patch cable to the front top, then run the rear top to a compressor and then the compressor to another thru of a patch panel then patched to the soundcard.
this way I can choose which preamp goes to which compressor. I have several preamps to choose from and several compressors to choose from. using the patch panel this way, I just choose which preamp to use and which compressor to use then I just choose which soundcard input to record from.
