I'm having a problem with a midi piano track from BIAB that I brought into Sonar Platinum. I don't know specifically if it's a BIAB issue or not as typically, the only midi I use in Sonar is Superior 2. The song has various RT instruments brought into Sonar for comping and this Super Midi piano part, (six midi tracks to comp into a final track).
I've pretty much got the piano part comped like I want it but now as I get about 3 minutes into the song the now time marker starts to stutter and eventually the marker, (and also the piano view),hangs but the song keeps playing. Sometimes other controls stop working. Pretty much makes it impossible to work.
I'm pretty sure it's related to this midi as I've opened several other projects, (with Superior midi in them), and they play fine but it may well be a Sonar issue. I'm still searching for answers but if there's anyone here who uses Sonar and has seen this behavior, I'd appreciate any information you could supply.
Thanks.
Paul

I haven't seen this problem, but it sounds like a resources issue.
The fact that the song keeps playing (initially) is not surprising as it will be running in a different (higher priority) thread than the threads running the controls, display updates etc.
What happens if you play the song from the start but mute that track?
Also, what happens if you do the same but play that track and mute all the other tracks?
Do you get the same result?
What version of Sonar?
What are the computer specs (CPU, RAM, O/S version etc)?
BIAB & RB2026 Win.(Audiophile), Windows 10 Pro & Windows 11, Cakewalk Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Session Keys Grand S & Electric R, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M, Pioneer Active Monitors.

All my specs are in my sig. Is it not showing?
Here they are:
BIAB 2016 Intel i7 930 OC to 3.36GHz, Win7 Pro, 12GB Ram 500GB OS, 1TB Audio, 1TB Samples, Delta 66 Omni Sonar Platinum, 64 bit
Buffer settings I will have to check on. Thing is, I use midi for drums with Superior 2 in every song and have never adjusted the buffers. This piano track does have six midi comp tracks though. Sonar might be straining to keep up if the buffers are too low. Good call.
I use various Mute/Solo/Dim Solo settings when I edit, but I'll go back and do specifics and report back. I'll also try archiving this track and see what happens.
Thanks guys.

Sorry, yes, your specs were showing, but during the reply, they don't actually show up.

Hey guys. I figured what is causing this. The one thing I did with this midi piano track that I don't normally do is I added a tempo change at the end of the song! Delete the tempo change and everything works as it should.
I'm pretty sure this is not supposed to happen so I'll do some more digging. It might be an issue with Newburyport.
Thanks for the help!

Thanks for letting us know.
Was the tempo change added in BiaB or after it was loaded in Sonar?

It was added in Sonar so it sure appears to be a Sonar problem. I need to roll back to the previous version and see what happens.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the help! Usually that is caused by the fact that MIDI buffers are set too low. In Sonar go to 1-preferences, 2-MIDI, 3- playback and recording and 4-playback. If this doesn't work let me know and give me more information about your sound card/audio interface.

So you're saying that if I have a tempo change in a song and even if there is no midi, or synths, just a few audio tracks, if this buffer is set too low, I will get this "Time Line" marker hang? Everything still plays, just the time line hangs. Interesting. Thanks. Someone over at the Cake forums mentioned this buffer as well. As far as I know, these settings have not changed in years. Sonar migrates all my settings each time I upgrade. Of course, I don't do tempo changes too often. I'll check this out.

I thought that you were working with MIDI! If you are then try it. If you are working with audio only then the buffers in your sound card/audio interface may need adjusting. If you are using both then both buffers can come into play. Also check your video drivers as sometimes they can mess up DAWs as can anything else running in the background like anti-stuff, wireless signals, programs attempting to connect to the Internet, etc. Also are there any effects on your tracks? Look ahead effects like compressors, limiters, etc. can cause problems where you have to adjust your buffers. Sometimes it ain't easy finding what is causing the problem, however I have had the most success with buffers. Note that my music computer is off-line so I do not have problems with anything running in the background.
