I asked this question in a thread related to Hi-Q instruments

I have a faint static sound at the beginning of every beat of each measure. I noticed first while using HI-Q instruments in BIAB.

Someone commented that this was not a PG music problem. I know as it happens with my music player too.

I'm using a focusrite 2i4 and have switched to MME from ASIO.

Is there a setting that will correct this, or a different driver I need to be using for Windows 10.

OK:
1. Your chain of sound reprodcution contains
a) your computer
b) a cable from the computer to the Sarlett
c) the 2i4
d) a cable from the 2i4 to the speaker(s)
e) the speaker(s)?

Can you -- just for testing -- connect the speakers directly to the computer's internal sound card? Is the static still there?
Do you have a second computer, mabe a friends computer, to check if it is the Focusrite?
Did you change cables to check if there is a higher resistance somewhere in the signal flow?

Chain = Brand New Desktop PC > USB Cable > 2i4 > Headphone out from the 2i4 1) Distortion sometimes overwhelming, 2) sometimes faint, 3) sometimes OK.

Other setup PC > HDMI Cable > TV w/internal speakers. Works fine.

I have a 5 year old laptop > USB cable > 2i4 > Headphones. works fine.

I have a similar (maybe the same?) problem.

In my case I'm in the process of building a new music workstation, brand new desktop computer running windows 10, brand new interface, Focusrite 2i4. I just started working on it a couple of days ago.

In my case the first time I play any music through the 2i4 after turning on the computer, doesn't matter what the source is, it comes out very distorted and also seems slow????

Unplugging the USB cable from the 2i4 and plugging it back it fixes the problem, and it is then good until the next time I reboot.

So, it is as if the 2i4 is not getting initialized properly on boot time, but gets setup correctly when I reset it by unplugging the cable then plugging it back in?

Adjust your buffers and latency.... give the buffers a boost... increase them and see what happens.

The way to check this is, if you hear it during playback but it's NOT there when you export..... it's a settings issue. Exports take all the time they need to get the audio correct. Live playback has a schedule to keep and will drop things that aren't getting processed to keep up with the schedule, and that gives you static, pops, clicks and even dropouts.

Well, you seem to have not really located but narrowed down the problem. What I would look into now is the difference between your desktop and your laptop.

Since your desktop modifies the sound in an unwanted manner while the laptop does not there must be a difference that causes the distortion.

This can be
1) an internal problem of the desktop.
2) a difference in the OS (they are different because of different processors)
3) a difference in some driver settings. (Not necessarily the drivers of the 2i4.)

Sitting at my desk I only can ask questions -- not knowing if you alread have excluded the topic from these questions as being not relevant for a good reason.
I wish you good luck to find the source of that distortion soon. I suspect that you are not really different than me when it comes to achieve something: At least I do not want to spend precious time to search obscure errors. The system should work as intended. wink

Judging from the lack of comments I guess no one thinks my problem is the same?

Perhaps not. I did manage to fix mine though, maybe this info will be of use to someone else.

I found an article over on the focusrite website that described the issue with a "fix" which requires turning off the fast boot option in windows 10. I did that, worked like a charm.

Hi Dave

Yes I agree the fast boot option in any windows build can play havoc with music applications and more .

As it gets up and goes before all things are really fully ready just a working set so to speak,

That is why disconnecting and reconnecting your device after the machine had properly loaded its drivers for the Scarlet worked.
This will be more noticeable if your device is not the default device for say audio as fast boot will load the default device first to get you going quick.
Just my thoughts.
Best regards
Mike

Exactly the same problem here, I have a i7 6gen processor, 24GB RAM DDR4L, SSD and 7200 RPM 2TB internal drives. Running Win 10. And I can expect a shockwave of static every time I restart the computer. Un-plug the interface and plug it back in and it works fantastic. Herb I adjusted the buffer, maybe I took it the wrong way. Should I increase the buffer or decrease the buffer. I'm more upset that I had to set it back to MME. Never had to do this on the old PC.

Hay David here is the latest driver from Focusrite

http://beta.focusrite.com/file.php?id=1196

Sweetwater Support installed this by remote control and showed me how to set the latency for recording and playback. Default settings when you install this file work fine. Also you have to reboot after the installation.

Hope it helps your problem. The Focusrite site says that a 2.25xx is for window's 10 but this Beta is much better says the Sweetwater Tech.

3.2.2.- 292 build

2i4 interface and a few other Scarlette units

Go to http://beta.focusrite.com/ for a complete list

You don't know until you try. This is entirely system-dependent, so no one else can give you an answer unless they have exactly the same system with the same software and settings.

However - in general, when sound "breaks up" and contains lots of static, raising the number of buffers fixes it. But not always.

About Focusrite and Windows 10:

I have three Focusrite units, but not the one you have, and I am pretty sure the same software does not work for mine. However, I did have a similar experience. When Windows 10 came out, they released beta driver software, but it didn't work well (and in fact had lots of static and stuttering). At their suggestion, I uninstalled everything and went back to the Windows 7 drivers, which are fine.

I need to follow up with Sweetwater and see if the situation has changed for the other Focusrite models.

Thanks. That's the same link as a few posts above, and I want to be sure: the original poster has a 2i4. The driver for that is quite different from the driver for the higher-end models, as is the operation. I've just finished re-reading the Focusrite site and found no mention of any beta drivers. Can you provide a link to more info?

Matt I posted the Focusrite driver for the 2i4 the unit I am using. It is not on the focusrite main site.

Check on their BETA site All their units are listed here.

FYI, the new beta driver for my 6i6, 18i8 and 18i20 says that it updates the firmware, and you can't go back. I have written to Focusrite Support for their opinion. [I get a click whenever I start the transport in Adobe Audition or SONAR.]

Hi, I think you missed my follow up post? I found an article on the focusrite website talking about the problem, the fix is to disable the windows 10 fast boot up option. Worked like a charm for me, maybe it will work for you too.

I didn't want to disable fast boot option in windows as that slows down the boot time of my SSD. Installing the new beta driver worked for me, and I still boot up in less that 2 seconds.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
