I think that if you have cable or dish, you will have to go through a receiver if you want to record programs. If you just want to watch recorded dvd or vhs, you can probably go using the composite cables. I'm using them to run my WII, but you have to select the source using the remote control. If you have hdtiv then there are other higher quality cables to consider as noted in the above post.
