I was thinking about the bat too, after finding out its a total damage (fixing cost higher than a new bike)

A couple of weks ago I took a look into Google "street view". very interesting, and I saw that in the states, except maybe for the huge cities, you have a parking paradise. There are those parking areas in front of restaurants, shops etc. So you don`t have to park directly on the street. I wish we had that here.

@ Sam: I live in the 16th. We have an Innenhof, but I can`t put my bike there, its not allowed.
