I've noticed something on this forum that I have rarly seen on other forums. I really don't belong to any other forum, but I have read enough on others to know there is something very different here.

From getting to know many of you, I've realized we only get to see a glimpse of the talents the people have here and there. We do see the music side, but not as much as I would guess!

I think of someone like Pat with his animation talents, THEN hear his theme song writing skills. So cool on both fronts! Just one person of the many that you get to see a bit more of.

I wonder about someone like a Floyd Jane, who obviously can write. There has got to be some great stories there wink (Hint, hint.) I know there has been A LOT of work put into being at your craft at that level.

My biggest point is this. It seems as though, this is pretty much the only forum where there are REALLY talented people that are not overly ego driven. In fact, to the opposite. I see a lot of humble people here...that I wish would maybe share a bit more of their accomplishments. Personally, I very much appreciate that. Musical or otherwise.

I guess that's it for now.

Hi Caaron,

I have to weigh in on this , because I strongly agree with your observation about the forum (not so much about my part in it)

In Feb 2015 I took a road trip through a bunch of eastern states to meet BIAB Forum members. I didn't really know what to expect. What I found was practically a carbon copy of your post.

EVERYBODY I met was multi-talented, bright, witty, focused... compared to the people I meet every day in life, every one of them was a cut above. I left each visit with the feeling that I had just spent time with one of the most amazing people ever... and at the next stop.. IT HAPPENED AGAIN!

What's the statistical likelihood of that happening in a truly random selection of people? I suspect it would be very unlikely. Yet it happened, which tells me there is some force acting on this group that minimizes the randomness.

it might make for an interesting discussion to speculate about the mystery ingredient that makes the people here the way they are. Whatever it is, I like the results it generates!

Hmmm, might make an interesting book. Did you record (writing, video, audio) your meetings?

I know I'd probably buy a copy. grin

What a cool idea! A blog could be another option. Heck, if you wrote it Tim, it could be the "Tim Cook Book!"

Thanks for the replies. I have to say, I thought more would may jump in on this. All good. I just wanted to pay a compliment to the forums. I'm liking them and the people!

Now, I have a lead balloon to go fly wink

It's an interesting thread, and probably explains why some people have been here so long.
Heck, some users were on the previous PGMusic forum that was retired more than 16 years ago ..

Mac's legendary 30k+ post count is nowhere near the real number; the count started over when the forum changed formats.. he probably made 50k posts here while participating, and helped a whole lot of people, me included.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Hey Caaron,

I figure it's pretty hard to judge the value of a thread by its immediate response. Once posted, its here for future reading and you never know when the words you posted might impact somebody's mood, point of view or anything else.

When we lay our best, most sincere thoughts on the table and walk away with no expectations, I think life has a way of picking them up and running with them.

If something good happens from our words, and we never know about it, is it still good?

I think your post is intriguing but in general the very types you've described are also the personalities that perhaps reticent to "toot their own horns."

Janice and I have a lot of interesting music stories mostly due to our time with our very noteworthy best friend Randy Howard. Our website has a link to his accomplishments and awards. And 30 years of playing in bluegrass bands certainly yielded a world of anecdotes.
If interested here's some info on Randy: Randy Howard

We could bore everybody with pictures and stories of our decade of successful mountain bike racing.

I retired from a career in mental health and then spent years working to recognize those many thousands of individuals who died and were buried on state hospital grounds. This resulted in appearances on the Today Show and several documentaries/books, etc. But it was not about me but rather honoring those individuals who in many instances lived their lives out and died at a place where they weren't even given the dignity of a grave marker.

I suppose things of this nature are of interest mostly to folks who share that particular interest.

And my accomplishments such as they are including those musical are due hugely more to perseverance than "talent." smile

Bud, you may have hit on part of the force the makes people in this group different than the statistically "normal" person. The ability to play music is learned over a long period... a lifetime. It requires perseverance. People who learn to do what it takes to meet a goal naturally carry that knowledge into other areas of their lives, and in the end they learn to succeed

Or not. What do others think?

Chuckle...good one.
For me....the above is a wrap.

Music/songwriting (since my live band era of a decade) is creative therapy only.
Like many here, I've done it for a long time and it's always enjoyable to come up with a new idea for a song, flesh it out and move along to the next one.
I've never aspired to writing formula songs for mass consumption and would have no illusions to that end.
My only endeavor with music/songwriting is to keep a respectable distance between me and the you totally suck genre. smile
Still don't know if I've achieved that.

Interesting responses.

Carry on....

I think a big reason is this forum is mostly populated by older folks. I'll guess over 50 on average. That makes for a nice civilized forum, not sure what that means for PGM's long term viability though. Are they going to be selling 40's big band or 50's country styles or 70's rock in 20 years? Even though much more modern styles are available you don't much talk of those on this forum.

The other thing is Biab is best used by people with some musical training. You really should know basic theory and song structure in order to get the most out of the program. It's like how can you type in a EbMaj7 or a 1st/2nd ending if you have no idea what that is? This makes for a more educated and/or mature crowd and the more of that you have the more you realize that you don't know everything.

There is a burgeoning market for Americana Music as evidenced by award shows, documentaries, charts, media, etc., all over the net. Americana is by definition a big tent and I think a fair amount of musicians here, at least on the user forum, fall under this genre. I would like to see more RT's that would enable one to build productions like those of Lucinda Williams, Son Volt, Ryan Bingham, Robert Earle Keene, Lake City Dive, and a host of others. And most importantly from my experience the genre has a wide age range of those following it.

FWIW, Janice and I aren't musically trained other than playing in bluegrass bands for decades. Three chords and hang on smile Actually it can get much more complex than that of course. My point is that we are both basic rhythm players (upright bass and acoustic guitar) but regardless of our limitations we get a LOT out of BiaB. I think BiaB can meet the needs of a variety of musicians operating on many different levels. For example I think we get the most out of the use of RT's and RD's but that is certainly not exploiting the many additional capabilities of Biab...but for us it what (and all) we need to build our tunes.

Old phart ramble with a big FWIW!

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe

This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
