Spanish Plaza

[Link no longer valid]

Through the Eighties and Nineties I was a big fan of the music of bands like Brand X, Pat Matheny, and Weather Report. I just loved listening to the fretless bass in the hands of Jaco Pastorius.

I composed a couple of dozen instrumental songs back then on a Korg X-3. The melodies usually started from playing around with the fretless bass patch on the keyboard and I would build around that.

In the intervening years the Korg crashed and the computer crashed but I just found a CD with about 10 songs I wrote from the late Nineties.

All of the instruments were played on the Korg and the midi was sent to Cakewalk for mixing.

I only have the stereo tracks left but I added a few plugins like Ozone and a channel tool and here is "Spanish Plaza"

Sounds great, Gruve! very interesting and melodic all the way through! (Although I missed the signature sound of your voice)

This illustrates to me just what a flexible composer you are. This sort of tune is one of the hardest to do well in my opinion. Keeping an instrumental interesting with various rhythms, melodies, harmonies and instrument choices is not something everybody can do.

You are an interesting man of many talents!

Lawrence,
I always like to hear the midi music we recorded before BIAB.
I had a Korg expander box in the 90's and sort think I recognise the sounds, but I forget the model of that box.
Nice listen

missed your voice tho' grin

This is great!! It is the kind of music that you just get washed away in. It would go great with a hang gliding video. I never really listened to Weather Report but I know that Jaco sound-the fretless bass can be amazingly expressive. And, Wayne Shorter is an unbelievable sax man. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for posting! Take care. Greg

Hi Lawrence,

just sounds great. Very groovy.
Being a bass player myself I can appreciate
the role it plays here.
A very enjoyable listen (though like Pat I missed your voice).

It is fun looking back on how we use to write and record. I was much younger then and when I think of all the time consuming ways that I went about recording... <face palm> I don't think I could do today!

Thank you.
