Like I said in early post I don't really use MP3 but this has now become a personal troubleshooting challenge (as in "this ain't business anymore, it's personal" LOL).

Yes, I saw your reply was to Eddie - so didn't mean to sound strident ( blush ) on that point

Thanks for looking into this

I will continue to try things on my end - it's more about knowing why this is happening more than actually losing sleep over fixing it.

I have multiple Android devices (cell phones and tablets) that do not recognize WMAs; my stereo amplifier with built-in usb and SD card ports do not recognize WMAs; my car cd player will not play WMAs on cds; the media player on my ebook reader does not recognize WMAs. I have not found much use for WMAs outside my Windows computer.

Wow, Jim. Looks like you're going to have get new phones and tablets, a new stereo system, and a new car. Nothing like a $40,000 CODEC.

Larry,
This is only hypothetical (seasoned with personal experience)

Cannot Get Stream Size (to me) implies it is not getting either the start/end point or the conversion rates to do the math
As tests

Try Save As to another seq filename, then try to convert.
Try a different conversion rate with same codec
Try converting in a different program with the same codec
Try converting to WMA in RB (if it still happens the error is likely in the seq file itself, not the MP3)
Try yelling at it

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I have the LAME encoder as well and still have nothing showing in attributes when I try to create an MP3.

Funny, in my case, at least LAME SHOWS up (actually both LAME and MPEG Layer-3 selections show up) in both RB and PT's (and it works in all other apps)

HOLD that thought: do loop until...

ok I'm back

use this as you see fit and AT OWN RISK

(It FIXED my issues anyway and now BOTH Lame and MPEG Layer III work in PT, RB, - note that LAME always worked in other apps during this problem investigation)

http://www.komeil.com/blog/enable-fraunhofer-mp3-l3codecp-acm-windows

(it will get you to a file "chortkeh-fix-mp3-codec.cmd" which is a simple registry "hack")

As an FYI - I remember about 8 months to a year ago Windows Media center/player was giving me fits (another TOOL I seldom use).

It would hang up, not play, it was the proverbial "intermittent" so I simply UNINSTALLED, cleaned up, and did a fresh REINSTALL of WMC and its components AND ANY updates.

After the ABOVE fixed my issue (I did some back tracking, I looked at each affected registry line, before and after) and I NOW suspect MS "fixed," doing that install and update, my ACM "stuff" to PROHIBIT Fraunhofer ACM (even though I was licensed from another source for it)

but in any case my issue is resolved

Good Luck

Larry

Eddie - do you just have the lame encoder DLL and executable, or did you install the LAME ACM. If the former, BIAB/RB won't see it; if the latter, BIAB/RB should see it.

Yep, I have used this as well, and it does enable the higher bit-rate settings. Interestingly, if you look online, you'll find Fraunhofer has moved on from MP3 technology into other areas and won't sell you a license (nor provide a place to do so). So the fact that it is going into the public domain fairly soon is good news.

John I don't know how to answer that. I went online and found a LAME encoder, note, the same one I used with XP years ago. I also installed Audacity, which brings with it a LAME encoder. Audacity works fine to convert to MP3. I still see no attributes available when I select MP3 for my encoding in Real Band.

What I need to know is "Look in your Windows/System32 folder for this file:" and I can tell you what I have. I DO have the one that Windows 7 disabled, and will look at that registry hack to enable it and see if that fixes it for me like it did for Larry.

Eddie -

Whether it ends up working on your system or not remains to be seen. But to even get close to using LAME in BIAB/RB, you have to install the LAME ACM Version (click to see more info), and not just installing the LAME MP3 Encoder (click link for more info).

ACM is the Audio Codec Manager, which basically installs the Codec into the registry as an audio codec and makes it available to applications (such as BIAB/RB) who query Windows for available CODECS. Just installing the executable/DLL version just copies those files to your hard drive, but doesn't update the registry.

Again, don't know if it will work for you or not, but it's the first step.

John, I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has had success playing WMA files on a non Windows computer, smart phone or media device. As an experiment some time ago I downloaded several free media players from the Google Play store and installed them on an Android tablet. None recognized WMAs.

Techno crap to follow:

Actually, ACM = Audio Compression Manger

In light of day (this was running together after a long day of chasing my tail on this one) I was concentrating on what that registry patch CHANGED not what it added.

It ADDED Fraunhofer (before upsetting folks - I own a license from way back so I was not focused on it or worried about usurping its use by MS products like Win Media Center) but nothing affecting LAME is in that cmd line registry hack so still not sure WHY it corrected anything with respect to LAME within PG RB or PT.

I already had a (correct and still unchanged) entry for msacm.lameacm in the registry 32-bit drivers section

( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 )

HOWEVER, that cmd line hack DID ADD the Fraunhofer acm (msacm.3acm set and set it to the newly defined l3codecp.acm)

For some TBD reason that FIXED the LAME issue in PG products - still not sure WHY.

Makes me wonder if the ACM in Windows had gotten corrupt somehow, and using the hack uncorrupted it.

That's the best I can come up with also (for now) but I hate not KNOWING, it annoys the he## out of me.

PS: for all late comers/last post only readers: This is NOT a PG RB or PT problem (symptoms just become painfully evident in RB and PT, that's all)

You are not alone

When I want audio in a more "convenient" portable form (like for my, duh, MP3 player or my Galaxy phone,..) I use MP3's - for use outside the house, in-house work areas, garage, re-loading bench, even in my car's really nice sound system. Anything more "faithful" than MP3 is wasted in those environments, and like you I find MP3 format to be a lot more ubiquitous plus like you, i have some home theater gear that does not play wma's so MP3 is COMMON.

If I want highest possible quality I use best format specific to the end device (OR PLAY my vinyl collection and forget all the geek stuff!)

However, I do not try to use RB or PT (or Sonar, Audacity, or anything else) to create MP3's either. I have a program that does bulk conversions (from almost any format to almost any format)- it's easier to use and faster to call up than a DAW

I did more reading. Microsoft, rather than pay licensing, disabled that codec. Larry's hack turns that codec back on and that fixed it. No corruption, no "something must have gotten screwed up" (A phrase I will NEVER use in computers. There are no pronouns in troubleshooting computers. "Something" doesn't get screwed up.).

Thank you, sir!!!

I've been following the thread. Interesting. Seems like the problem was due to Windows and not Realband.

More specifically upgradng to Windows 7 or newer. XP was apparently before that licensing deal that resulted in that codec being disabled.

yes, re: Fraunhofer

but still puzzling over my LAME (which is nothing more than yet another circumvention of licensing) issue within RB/PT that WORKED about a year ago but then didn't a few days ago.

SO SOMETHING did get CHANGED money is on:

A) a Microsoft update (unlikely),
B) my re-installation of Win Media Center/player (most likely when updates included), or
C) some other utility, audio, or video program that I installed - all possible candidates

[WE ALL know there is no such thing as a "time of day" error (except as it relates to GPS or other satellite time sync issues, aircraft avionics joke - LOL) but to the caveman even paper airplanes would have been unexplained and magic.]

Glad you got something going there Eddie

"my re-installation of Win Media Center/player (most likely when updates included)"

^^ I think this.
For fraunhofer your l3codecp may have got overwritten with generic Windows one .. can you retrieve the good one from old computer? May be able to just copy over the good version between systems. Windows just uses it if it is there. No checking as far as I have experienced.

For Lame, maybe Windows no longer has that mp3 registry entry .. have you tried to uninstall and re-install Lame?

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library.
