This is one of my oldest songs, but I've never been happy with the recordings, I must have tried 6 different arrangements. Lately I've been having fun borrowing elements from other bands, and it occurred to me that this song has dynamics similar to material by Boston. So I researched and studied the production techniques Tom Scholz used on More Than a Feeling, and borrowed a few of them in this arrangement.

FOOL IN LOVE

GCD
GDCD No one sees inside me, and the don't know how I feel 21
GBmAmD They only glimpse the loneliness that I cannot reveal
GCBmAm When I think about you, I almost hear you call
GCDG and I was wondering if you ever think of me at all

DG BmCAmG I'm a fool, such a fool in love with you 39
DG BmEmCAm I am lost in love, and I don't know what to do
DG BmCD I get nervous when I see you, my composure slips away
GBmCD I forget all of my speeches, and I don't now what to say

BmCAm But I'm tired of fooling around 56
BmCAm so tired of playing the clown
DGCD and I want to see what the power of love can do
GCDG CDG I'm a fool, such a fool in love with you

DG BmCAmG 72
SOLO DG BmEmCAm
DGCD
GCD GCD Gstop
GCD (4) 89

GDCD When my life is through and I travel on my way 97
GBmAmD with everything behind me, I hope that I can say
GCBmAm I took the chances and hung them on the wall
GCDG and if you love me I can tell the world I had it all

DG BmCAmG I'm a fool, such a fool in love with you 115
DG BmEmCAm I am lost in love, and I don't know what to do
DG BmCD It's because you're something special and frightening to me
GBmCD and I could talk to anybody else more easily
D4)
BmCAm But I'm tired of fooling around 135
BmCAm so tired of playing the clown
DGCD and I've got to see what the power of love can do
GCDG CDG I'm a fool such a fool in love with you
GCDG CDG I'm a fool,, such a fool in love with you 151

Hi Will,

I liked this! You're right, it has a BOSTON feel to it.. I'm curious to know what production techniques you used from MORE THAN A FEELING...

The song sounds like it has a piano, but I didn't see a piano real track listed. It also sounded like there were more guitar parts than you had listed, and I'm wondering if you played some of the tracks? Especially since throughout the song one of the guitars mimics what the singer is doing, and it seems unlikely that any realtracks would have generated a part that close to your melody.

anyway, good stuff! Thanks for posting!

Hi Will,

Boston yes, at times for me it’s amazing how you are also able to take one back to the 60s and 70s that typical ‘English sound like the Yardbirds and others. You’re a real Abbey Rd man. I enjoyed this song as it took me way back to those eras, ones that gave birth to so many wonderful songs. Good production all round.

Very nicely done!! You've captured that 70's/80's vibe well. Reverb is heavy but I think it totally works for this one. Just really darn pleasant to listen to. One of my faves by you!! Take care. Greg

Pat, I often go back to BB for additional tracks, and they don't show up in the memo. The piano is 1007, Pop Flowing. Yes, I played many of the guitars, the lead solo is from RB but the other solo parts are me on my Strat. Here are some of the tricks I borrowed from Tom Scholz:
*Electric guitars heavily EQ'ed at 800Hz, then run through compressor, amp, and various other effects
*Multiple guitars are slightly out of tune with each other
*Harmonics used as an accent
*Feedback used at breaks
*solo guitar parts played in harmony, I think the interval is a fifth
*Dynamics within the song accentuate the soft and loud parts, beginning and ending with acoustic 12 string, building to multiple guitars playing power chords.
Not only is there a piano, but in the quiet middle section there is a string quartet, courtesy BB, with a solo violin on top from my new Yamaha XE. I enjoy studying other people's production and trying to incorporate elements, I learn a lot and improve my own arranging abilities.

This is a strong production that sounds huge on the monitors. We enjoyed it and thanks
for all the info on how it came together. It's particularly interesting about the way you
processed the guitars.

"sounds huge on the monitors" is the best compliment I could receive, I'm sure you understand.

Of course, the main solo is from RealBand, I can't play like that.
