As a team with his brother and later as a solo the man was a legend. I believe what elevated his name recognition amongst the general (outside Bluegrass circle) public was the knowledge he was the voice behind George Clooney "eating the mike" while singing in the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. That movie has many funny scenes but none are funnier than the scene at the radio station.

George Clooney's character's singing voice was provided by Dan Tyminski, not Ralph Stanley. Ralph did O Death and Angel Band in the movie's soundtrack and the movie definitely helped raise awareness of him and the music in general!
