Hello,
I would like to make the ending chord hold longer than what it is doing. Is this possible?
So far I have tried using the "Hold" function like "C..." but it still seems to end the song abruptly.
I would like it to be more of long sustained chord at the end.
Thanks very much for your help.
Steve

Make sure that at least the last bar of the last chorus is a Tag. Then the hold will last for four beats. I don't know how to make it any longer.

What happens if you put more bar(s) of held Chords:
C... | C... |C...
It will depend on the style, sometimes the drums will play a beat on the further held Chords

Hopefully Matt can chime in on this. I seem to remember he had a solution for held chords that he posted sometime ago.

Perhaps it is this?
I'm not at a BIAB computer now, but I think the program defaults to a two-measure hold in the Song Settings dialog, which means two measures of playing plus two more measures for a fade out. I'm assuming you have a recent version of BIAB here, since it used to stop after two bars not four. Sometimes even four bars is not enough and it clips off a fade.
To fix it, do your own ending. Uncheck the box for the 2-bar ending (maybe it says 4, but don't use it whatever it says).
And here's the trick: the number in End must be well past where you have the last held chord. This can either be the measure number specified in the End box on the chord sheet screen if not using a Tag, or Tag Ends at Bar ... if you are using a Tag, but the point is to force the program to have many more measures than it would otherwise use on an ending. In other words, if the last hold is in measure 72, put 80 or some such in the End or Tag Ends. This should allow for a more natural fade out of those instruments that should have it.
Also make sure you are up to date with all RealTracks patches and Holds patches, and be aware there may still be a few RealTracks for which Holds are not yet available. You can see in the RealTracks picker dialog box whether or not Holds are supported for each.
One last little Gotcha: even when you allow plenty of bars for a fade, some people finish off with a "stopper" chord like C. or F. as the final chord. If you do this, always make the stopper chord a different chord than the held chord. Any other chord will do; change the root and/or the chord type.

Shut off the automatic 2 or 4 bar ending.....OR... simply add another 8 or so measures to the song....
Then, place the HOLD on the last chord of the song and listen to it fade over those 8 bars..... usually by 4 bars it's sufficiently faded.
I move it to a DAW and use an envelope to take it out totally, exactly where I want. I believe I did this in Dust On The Floor.... on my music page.... I slowed down as I entered the ending and the last chord was held and I used the envelopes in my DAW to fade it out in a timely manner.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

If you want the ending to hold, you need to turn off the 2-bar ending feature; otherwise, BIAB will generate an ending already defined in the style. You can't have a style based ending and a held ending at the same time.
So, as has been said, turn off the feature, add your chord with three dots (for a hold), and then how every many bars you want to end the song, enter another chord with a single dot (but this chord must be different from the held chord - one of those BIAB eccentricities). For example, if you end with G..., then three bars later enter something like G7. or Gsus.
If you are are concerned about printout, then yes, you'll probably have to white it out.
Also, remember, different instruments decay at different rates. You're probably not going to get a piano, for example, to hold more than a few bars, and the drums are going to just play a shot and be done with it. An electric guitar should hold for quite awhile, but an acoustic won't (unless it's MIDI, and then it might depending upon your sound source).
Just experiment until you get the sound you want.

Very informative. Thanks Matt & John. I've had problems with endings since day 1.

Thanks for that (especially Matt). I was struggling with this on a few songs. I also find I have to experiment with the last chords eg switching them around to get a nice ending. I guess it has to be a perfect cadence or some such thing.

Also, for anyone who exports RT's to a DAW, I've have very good results using Melodyne to stretch those held chords.
YMMV

YMMV Stretching out endings is very easy to do in RealBand also. Select the RealTrack(s) you want to extend, rt click on the selection and select Time Stretch and Pitch Shift from the menu and then select the percentage amount to stretch and pitch shift the selected area and RB takes care of the rest.

Thanks for the tip, Charlie. I've never tried that. I usually time stretch in Reaper using stretch markers. The ability to time stretch (or shrink) is such a useful feature.

Noel, also doing this in RB can quickly give you additional endings to audition.
Although you can't just select and regenerate the new audio and retain the time stretch and pitch correction, You can regenerate new endings and time stretch/pitch correct the newly generated Realtrack ending.
This is much easier and so much faster than switching back and forth between another DAW or using Melodyne.

You can avoid having to do time-stretching by putting in a huge tempo drop (50% or more)on the held bar or the one after it, depending on the song.
When you import it into a DAW, you'll have a nice long fade which you can fade out as needed.
BTW - If you build the tempo change into the BiaB file, and then import it into RB as suggested above, your new endings will also get the extended hold.
