Latency is another reason why I don't use software synths.

I use an array of at least a half dozen synths and have the option of adding a few more. I choose the most appropriate sounds for the song from each synth, so the bass and muted guitar might sound best from one synth, the kick drum from another, the snare from yet another, the brass from yet another, and so on.

All of my hardware synths have a latency of 5 or 6 ms - approximately 5 or 6 feet of distance equivalent. When I'm inputting music in real time, I don't notice that latency.

Plus when I play a sequence with a half dozen or more synths, for all practical purposes they are all timed together (+- 1ms).

One more thing, no load on the CPU of the computer which means any other functions like recording audio are more robust.

Someday computers will be fast enough to handle 6 software synths at 5ms latency or better, but until then, I'll go with the better alternative, hardware synths and synth modules.
