Grab the freeware SimpleSynth. It actually includes the very same sound set that Mac built-in Quicktime sounds are using, but you can easily find loads of far better GM compatible soundfont banks online for it to use instead. You can then use your external midi keyboard (provided you got one) as input device to test the sounds.

You could then take this a step further if you want to and make SimpleSynth be the sound output device for BBox (not the Realtracks, of course, just the midi), instead of using the Built-in DLS option in BBox. Just be advised, if you do that, the 'render to audio' will still only use the Built-in set.
