Good day, hope someone can explain why:
it takes 30 seconds to a minute before File Directory shows up displaying the content?

Is there a setting regarding USB in Windows 7 that I can access and change something??

Thanks

I doubt it is Windows. Check for malware, though.

Is this drive USB 3? They seem to take a bit longer to be recognized (though not that long).

Is this drive bus powered, or does it have its own power supply? If bus powered, are you plugging it into a powered USB hub? Try another USB port, particularly one on the back of the case if a desktop.

Is the drive itself OK, using CHKDSK? Is it relatively defragmented?

Do you hear any noise in the drive casing? You can open the case and make sure the connections are tight.

You can also check the article below, applies for XP and W7.
Although the top of the page makes it appear to be XP specific, if you scroll down to the Properties section, you'll see W7 listed ..

Basically if a Drive doesn't have an assigned drive letter it's more prone to happen. Even moving the USB drive to a different port (or using another device in that same port on occasion) can cause this in my experience.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Bob is correct. I try to keep my devices in the same port so drive assignments persist and device drivers don't need to be reloaded.

Having said that, I have one peculiar USB 3.0 portable SSD drive that will NOT work unless I alternate it between ports each time! This drive has password-protect software on it, so maybe that's a clue.

Malware? No I do a routine check with a few apps.
Bus powered - No, USB 2, never a problem with drive letters.

Thanks for the Windows link, I had a quick look at it and will look more deeply later.

Older laptop, not too many bells and whistles.

Thanks for the responses.

OK so far. There were a few other questions (I know, this is a pain, but that's how it's done). And how full is your laptop's hard drive?

That's getting close to the 15% threshold for what is called thrashing. Whether or not this affects your external drive, it's time to weed.

Matt: "time to weed" ??

I'm guessing that means removing some programs ??
Oh I go thru that now and again.

Thanks again.

You also could get a bigger drive -- smile -- and clone your current one to the bigger drive.
