A good starter pack is the free Reaper plugins

That along with Classic compressor (vocals) and Ambience (a reverb with a LOT of control) are the first things I'll load on a system I am asked to work on.

Magnus worked with James Chandler Jr (former PGMusic staff) to work out a bug Ambience had in Powertracks, I've liked this reverb for a long time. A reverb with MIDI Learn, EQ, and EQ on the damping adds a lot of control.

All the above are a light load on the system. I've run 20-30 instances of these many many times, though usually I'll use Ambience in an AUX slot so I can share it for consistency. Makes everything sound like it's in the same room that way.

These are all free. Free VSTs will get you a long way. The first one I'd recommend spending money on is Ozone.
Worth every penny, but costs quite a few of them.
