Is it possible to change the number of bars in a single row only? In order to keep all the double bars on the left edge, I need to have 5 bars in one row to accommodate a 1st and 2nd ending. Ray

I think this is what you want?

Options -> Display

then in middle, about two-thirds way down, is "Number Of Columns" and to the right is a +/- box

Hope this helps
Larry

Ray,

It's possible to do on the Leadsheet when in Fakesheet mode but not on the chord sheet (as far as I understand it at least). The below is taken from the pdf manual for 2016.

I have an idea that could be useful. I've said many times Help is not helpful. Whenever I see a good solution like this to anything, I'm going to search for it in the Help files.

I just did and got zip. Part of the problem is phrasing the question so I put into Search "number of bars in a row", then "bars in a row" then "Set bars in rows". Zilch. What else would you enter for this question?

I think that since the PG staff is getting so much better at watching these threads now this might be a way to get some action on Help. It's tough to find lots of stuff there.

To PG staff. How would you do this and no cheating. You have to only use Help. This is a very good question and should be easy to find an answer.

Hi Bob,

Clicking the Opt button in the Leadsheet Window to get to Lead Sheet Options and then clicking on Help got me to the page that describes how this feature works. I find those Help buttons in all the dialogs to be very helpful when I forget where to find something, that's almost always the method I use, and what I tend to recommend to customers.

Regarding using the Search function in the Help file, when I searched for "Bars per line" (without the quotes), "Lead Sheet Options" was one of my results. Since this is related to the Lead Sheet, I went straight there and "Fakesheet bars/line" was automatically highlighted. I've noticed that "rows" usually refers to the Chord Sheet, and "lines" tends to be used for notation.

Not intending to contradict your observations about the Help file or anything, but that's how I use it. smile

Thanks
Kent

Yea Ray, my mistake, I KNEW you knew BIAB better than that. I simply missed the word "SINGLE" as in

"…in a single row only?" from your original post. I really need to, RTFQ next time blush

Glad you got it.

Larry

Kent, I'm not seeing that. I used "bars per line" even though I think rows is a better descriptor, and Leadsheet Options is 15th on my list. That's a lot of clicking to work your way down to that. I click on it and the same Options window opens that you get if you are in the Leadsheet window and click Options. Then in the Options window I click Help and I'm back in the same Help Leadsheet window. Congratulations I just circumnavigated the Earth... Nothing is highlighted concerning Fakebook bars/line although it is there in the lower left of the window.

I just tried writing in fakesheet bars/line and 4 items came up as search results. 3 completely off topic and one is the same Leadsheet window. Ok, but where is any explanation that you can type a string in that box indicating alternating rows sorry, lines <cough>?

My whole point is first, we're talking about a user who doesn't know that this info is in either the Leadsheet or Fakesheet windows. They decide to search Help which is not illogical and it shows up 15th on a big list. Second, even though Noel said it's in the pdf manual, I can't find anything about alternate lines in the internal Biab Help system which is interesting since you're saying you did.

Going from the Leadsheet to Fakesheet to Options and having to look at all that stuff and try to understand it before finally seeing the fakesheet bars/line is pretty daunting for someone who's not a Biab expert.

Since I'm a big geek, I just spent a good 45 minutes messing with this and still can't find it. If this isn't a big indictment of how bad the Help files are I don't know what is. Especially considering we all have phones with great voice activated Search that can find damn near anything using plain ole conversation.

Help needs a total revamp. Why? Because simply typing something close to "bars per row" "bars/line" whatever should produce a link directly to that exact point out of the pdf manual. Forget all the Leadsheet, Fakesheet stuff. Just a link to that one thing. Please pass that on for me.

Perfectly said! As more of a novice BIAB user (and novice musician) I could never have figured that out from the help system. Whenever I press a button and get a dialog box with 50 choices, more than half of which I don't even know what they mean, I realize the time and effort to succeed will far outweigh the value and I find another way. I suspect there are others who never tap into the power of BIAB for the same reason.

After all this I will say this is a very cool tip that I will begin using right now. I had no idea so thanks for asking this question Ray. I do a lot of charts too.

Here's a wild thought. PG revamps Help and ties it to Cortana. How cool would that be? To those who don't have Win 10, Cortana is a new digital assistant. It's voice activated on tablets but on a regular desktop system there's a box in the lower left that keeps saying "Ask me anything" and you type a question in there.

Hi Bob,

Right, "Leadsheet Window Options" is the 15th result when we search for "bars per line", and the second one when searching for "Fakesheet Bars/Line", but since the question is about the Leadsheet window, that would be the first one I'd read (there's no way for our search function to know you're referring to the Lead Sheet, so we need to have an idea of what we're looking for).

The page on Lead Sheet Window Options explains how the feature works, maybe halfway down the page:

"Fakesheet bars/line controls how many bars are printed for each line of a fake sheet printout. For example, enter 4,6,4 to print four bars on the first line, six bars on the second line, and four bars on the third line."

For the record, I'm paying attention to what you're saying, and your ability to find things is 100% relevant, but that's how I found the information you're asking about.

Thanks
Kent

Thank you for this discussion I finally figured out how to print out different number of lines on printouts, after doing lots of cutting and pasting of printout files. I like that BB has this feature, however, I think it could be implemented better, in a graphical way or a per row way rather then one box for the whole song.

thanks again! PS I love band in a box been using it for as long as it's been out and wouldn't be the songwriter I am without it.
