Hi folks,

This may have been posted a few years back, but now that we have a dedicated forum for general production discussion, I thought it might be time for a re-post for those who haven't seen it.

It's about an hour long, but I feel this video is worth a watch (or re-watch) if you work with audio. They go into detail about the limits of human hearing and how the brain processes audio information (including how it can be tricked), and dispel a lot of myths that surround high-end (expensive) audio equipment and super-high resolution audio files.

He also wrote a short related article back in '98, it's short and worth checking out:

And if you want a great example of "audiophile"-marketed nonsense, these guys are always good for a laugh.. though I'm not sure if it's satire or not:

Thanks

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

I always use Monster Cables because a salesman once assured me that electrons travel faster in their cables, which improves the sound. Of course they do.

I think I posted that link a few years back. It's one of my go-to links when people talk about how much better analog recording is compared to digital.

I'm guilty of posting it in a few other threads over the years since.

Ethan Winer is a key member of another online organization called ++ PLAY WITH YOUR MUSIC .ORG ++ devoted to helping newbies learn about digital recording, mixing and music theory. He has a YouTube series of Music Theory videos that are great.

There is a reason that the typical audiophile would not submit to a double blind study of high end vs mid level audio components or to a well designed double blind test of analogue vs digital sound. If anybody has run across such a study I would love to read it.

I went through the high end journey from early McIntosh tube stuff to 80's solid state Carver components. Now days I run a very basic stereo Yamaha amp with very basic Polk Audio speakers. And all is good.

The short article was a very interesting read. It dispelled a few myths that I had heard over the years. Especially the analog / digital one. I don't feel so bad about getting rid of my huge record collection - apart from the rare Blues albums.

Bud, I remember reading this article back in the day about amp simulations. http://www.emusician.com/how-to/1334/showdown-at-the-clubhouse--amp-software-vs-amps/40821

I can only provide anecdotal evidence but I remember a guitar forum I used to hang out on going absolutely crazy for directional gold-plated patch cables... They were optimized to move the sound from right to left! (Or from left to right, if you were left handed.) And of course they cost about $79 each.
